Need big time help

So my dad's work computer was bogged with viruses and whatnot. So I got rid of those, but windows explorer kept quiting, so I did a repair install. Now I get this error-

Which doesn't allow windows to boot. What should I do?
Dell Dimension 2400, keeping the data is crucial because it is for his work and there are needed files on there.
EDIT- Safe mode doesn't work either.
 
If by cleaning you mean taking it out and cleaning it, then yes. Right now I am copying the entire HD to my pc in sig, so before I do anything else, I can keep the data. But anything else? My dad lost the installation cd's for most of the programs, so can't really do a fresh install because the software is really expensive.
 
What I mean is did you clear the cmos by taking the battery out and leaving it out for about 3 or 4 minutes. This should reset the bios to factory specs and allow you to boot. Is this a desktop or laptop.
 
realy you should have backed up all important stuff elsewhere and the clean install windows again.

it would have just been easier than trying to get rid of the viruses etc.

the only problem is now...will you be able to get back that data you need?:cool:
 
It's a desktop.
I have all the data I need. But one of the program's is from '88 and he doesn't have the installation cd, because he has been updating since he got it. So any way to copy that program and put it on a fresh install? My guess is probably not, but are there any ways? Because he cannot stand to loose this program.

i think he would have to buy the new version of whatever that programme is he needs unfurtunatly, unless you can get the pc to boot back up as normal in windows .
 
Sounds like a driver conflict. Happened to me awhile back, same stop error. Boot into safe mode and remove video drivers, sound drivers, any driver third party driver you can easily replace, then try booting again.

Edit: I just saw the safe mode thing.. Huh. Sounds like a format and reinstall is needed.
