could i take XP off of my current computer and install it onto a different one or do i just need to buy a new copy of XP?

If the copy of windows you are using came with a system by Dell, Hp, Accer or any of the other big companys, then no.

If it was a copy you bought seperate from your computer then yes. But the rule is you can not use it on 2 seperate systems at the same time, it can only be installed on 1 system.

If you take your hard drive with the Windows XP on it and connect it to another motherboard you should be fine. That is what I did a few months ago on an upgrade with some help from others.

I bought a my current case, processor, motherboard, power supply and Random Access Memory and pulled my old hard drive and optical drive from my old system. Cost me a total of about $385.

Umm... No.

That is one of the worst things you can do. For one thing you will have all kinds of problems with it. The chipset drivers for the old board are still there and cause conflicts with the new board, among other things. It might work for a while, but in the long run you would be much better off installing the OS fresh.

If you did manage to get that Dell OS working, you would be still breaking the law, since on the agreement with Dell when you first bought it, it states that it will never be used on a different system. So when it comes time to register the copy of the OS, it will most likely be refused.
