Q6600 Shutting down From Overheating Not Overclocked help!

hello all, im having some real trouble with my computer that i built about a month ago in regards to overheating. I always leave my computer on but it has not been staying on for more than 24 hours straight. Ive been asleep the last 4 or 5 nights in a row and around 4am the computer starts beeping loudly. if i ignore it it shuts down, but ive been just turning it off when i hear this. so the other night it did it again and i pulled it out and touched the heat sink, OUCH! the sucker was so hot i couldnt even keep my finger on it. the fan was working i think because it still works. Its really odd because when im using the comp it seems to have no problems with overheating. when i stop using it and nothing is being done on it, it gets stupidly hot. I ahve no idea what the cause of this is, i removed the heatsink and reapplied new compound and did it perfectly but still the same issue arises. I have no idea what is going on, and i have not been overclocking my system at all. i also have another fan in the case. any help greatly appreciated
 
ok, first try re-seating the cpu with new thermal paste, are you using stock cooling?

also look in bios and see what your temps are reading
also note the clock speed, and vcore

run temp checks in windows under various stress tests

report all this back to us
 
no do not put thermal paste on the pins lol. he's saying reseat the heatsink on the CPU with thermal paste.
 
ah, yes, i did this, i ensured i had a nice even layer, this is the second compound application now. counting the manufacture compound that was included with initial purchase. the heatsink is properly seated fo sure. i took extra precaution to follow all instructions including applying pressure in a diaganol fashion, and all pins were 100% securely and completley seated. im convinced the heating problem is not the compound, but somthing else. another reason i believe this is because the heatsink its self is the thing that is becoming so hot. and i mean unbearibly hot, not just hot. this would indicate to me that there is a sufficent heat transfer between the heatsink and the cpu

if your heatsink burns to the touch you have major issues. reseat your HSF like everyone else said. it should not wiggle or move around at all. apply a pea size amount of thermal paste and spread it around with plastic over your finger, as evenly as possible. make sure your fans are all working. you may want to consider adding fans if you can. one in the rear blowing out air, and one in the front sucking air in usually is enough.

shin-etsu 795 compound, suposivly the best out there for fan cooled systems.

sys temp is 40c/104F
cpu temp is 25c/77F

clock speed is 1600mhz

VcoreA is 1.120
+3.3v is 3.32
+12v is 12.04
cpu vid is 1.32

when the overheating occurs im almost always in bed asleep. my comp sounds like its just craming some program. (i can hear it doing somthing but i dont know what because i dont have anything running but downloads.) I also have these downloads running right now and have since i turned my comp back on this afternoon. right now my comp has been running 6+hours no problems. ive been gaming on BF2142 and multi tasking with no problem. it makes no sense to me why im getting this issue at night when im not even using my computer. I Will update the temps tonight if i am awaken by that horrendus beeping again in my sleep. thanks again guys.

okay, ive discovered the problem but not the solution. my comp for some damn reason doesnt run the cpu fan when its not being used. thismorning my computer started beeping at me so i got out of bed and went to check it out. Temps are as follows:

sys: 31c/87f
cpu: 60/140

no fan speed at all. the fan does however work. but it does not run constantly. only when the comp is in use. someone please help me turn my fan on indefinently.
mobo gigabyte 965p-ds3
cpu: intel 775 Q6600 2.4ghz core 2 quad
 
Are you sure it is connected to the CPU fan port? And not just a fan port? The CPU fan connector is usually right next to the CPU.

Also, when you re did the thermal paste, did you clean the old paste off first? You need to make sure that the old paste is completely removed using Alcohol. Remove the cpu and fan and clean both surfaces until ALL residue is removed, then apply the new paste. Reinstall the cpu and then the fan. Make sure no paste gets onto the pins underneath the cpu as that will cause a short and destroy your cpu and motherboard.

yes brother, for sure its all connected. i dont think you saw my last post. i think ive identified the prob but now need a solution
 
My last post could have been a solution, since it the cpu fan is not plugged into the right connector, it will shut off at times. But if it is plugged into the right connector it should be powered on at all times.

I was just asking to make sure you had it connected to the right connector.

You would be surprised how many people connect it to the wrong port.
 
turn off auto fan speed control in bios, set it to (none), it will run the fan at 12v or full speed all the time.
 
Wow just wow

I would follow Bradan's advice, I have an option in my bios as well that will shut the fan off if the computer is not in use.

I dont know what kind of genius thought that was a good idea but its not something I would use.

Its a good possibility that may be the cause!!
