2gb vs. 3gb

im considering adding 1 more gb of memory to my system. will i see any improvement? its not that 2 gb isnt enough, its plenty. however for less than 40 bucks if it will make my system even faster, it would be worth it. currently i have an AMD 4200+ x2, nvidia 7900 GS, and 2 GB of ram. Also could it slow my system down to add 1 stick of memory? right now i have 2 sticks of memory so if i add one stick will it drop it down to single channel? i have a gigabyte socket AM2 motherboard.

If you have dual channel ram with the 2 sticks, then adding 1 more stick will disable dual channel, which will slow you down.

With dual channel you need to add pairs of ram at a time. So if you added 2, 512 sticks you would keep dual channel alive. Adding 1, 1 gig stick would disable dual channel.

And it is wise to use the same brand of ram, since timings can throw you off as well. So check the timings of any ram you buy and make sure it is the same as your old ram.

is any performance gain seen with anything over 2 gb or is it just a waste of time?

it depends on the programs and operating system you use... for gaming I would upgrade the video card before adding more ram... for video editing, graphics design programs and things like that having more than 2gb kicks ass!
