laptop for college

ok i'm a senior in hgh school and am about to go to college for computer engineering in the fall, I have been looking for a good laptop to take with me, the laptops main focus will be for multi-tasking, college assignments, and internet browsing, along with music, I have a few that I have been looking at alot, and am looking for input on them, and if you have any other suggestions then feel free to input, budget is around 1500.00 but would like to keep it lower if possible.

You go to the Circuit City store and the salespeople will throw you all kinds of crap.... "Do you want to upgrade to 2Gb of RAM for $200 extra?" Answer is no on that one...
 
If its for multi-tasking, browsing, microsoft office (or similar), and music, you're not going to need a hell of a lot. I think that this model from eBuyer should do, and its under your price tag. It has the following specifications:

AMD Mobile Sempron 3600+ (2GHz)
1GB Installed RAM (Upgradeable to 4GB)
80GB HDD
ATI Raedon X1270 Graphics (should do for most games)
Windows XP Professional (better than Vista, because it always works)
DVD Writer
Wireless LAN, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth

Should do all you want and more, and its only 390 quid, about $900 including shipping. Check it out here. I get all my stuff from eBuyer, because its reliable, is direct from the manufacturer, and is much cheaper than "in the store" sales. Although your ones mentioned above might be OK, in some cases, you're getting a much better deal with this one - and its cheaper (hhmmm, money to spare - what should I do with it? Spend it on me!)
 
I have choose some under $1500 at newegg for you for your reference. I only choose 15.4", I have no idea about if you need big mon. or small mon. or if weight important.

Do you realise PC in US is ALWAYS cheaper! why bother to order from UK and paying UK govement 17.5% VAT:mad: and losing warranty!?
 
I do not recommend a sony, I have an fz140e and the hard drive is 4200 rpm which is very very slow, it brings down the performance of the whole system.
I highly recommend a Lenovo thinkpad, they are very rugged, sony's and hp's are very fragile and will break down if you carry them around everyday.

Get atleast 2 gb of ram, you will need to run AutoCAD, and most probably Matlab for your engineering classes, and less than 2 gb will be very slow with VISTA.
