What the hell is wrong with my computer (Custom Build)

Hey guys... I really need help with my computer...

About a month or 2 ago, when I would start up my computer, one of the fans inside would start making a loud noise, but it always stopped after like 10 seconds... Then it progressed to making a really loud noise until I tapped the case. Then it progressed to making a really loud noise until I hit the case, it would come back a little bit softer, then I would hit it a few more times (not that hard) and it would stop. Now it's at the point where I came home from work and it's making the noise. I managed to figure out that it's the graphics card fan on my crappy asus card.... I took it out, used compressed air to blow the dust out, and dusted my whole computer down twice with compressed air... But it still made the sound....

Now I decided to start my asus "pc probe" which gives you the temperatures etc, and it was NOT good... my CPU fan of all things was at 80 degrees celcius... Where I thought something like 50 was the limit... So I shut it down and blew the dust out again and started it up and the reading still said 80. I'm pretty sure it's not safe to operate at that temperature right?

The readings were as follows:

MoBo: 32 C
CPU: 73 C

Chassis Fan: 1200 RPM

CPU Fan: 713 RPM.

ANY ADVICE??? I Really Have no clue what to do...

Bad bearing on the fan is causing that... New cooler/fan is probably needed... Now as for your CPU, what are your system specs? Is it on a stock cooler?

Well, the noisy fan sounds like it has a bad bearing. That will cause it to vibrate and make a noise. If it's on the GPU, then You could find a fan that will fit or just get a new GPU. I'm not sure how your card looks, so you'll have to judge it.

80*C is super high for a CPU. Is the heatsink fan properly connected and running? Is your heatsink seated properly? Are you using a thermal compound between the CPU and heatsink? I'd compare the Asus readings with another program. Try downloading SpeedFan to get a second opinion, so-to-say. Your CPU fan speed is also *very* low. Go into BIOS and Disable any auto-fan control there so the CPU fan will always blow at the highest setting.

How many case fans do you have? If you don't already have it, one Front Intake and one Rear Exhaust will do wonders for airflow and lower temps.

Hey sorry... I dont know why my signature is not showing.. specs in my sig:

Hey... I will download that now and check out the bios fan settings... Is it safe to even run my computer for like 15 minutes though to do it at that temperature???

I have ONE big fan on the case in the rear, and then a CPU fan (I mean the heatsink that came with the CPU) with a little funnel from the case that leads to the cpu fan/heatsink... I did use thermal grease when putting it together and havent had a problem really up till now.... At this point I dont even care about the GPU fan... I can fix that later, but the CPU fan is worrying me... If I have to takeout the heatsink and reseat it I guess I can it will be a huge hassle though...

Intel cooler on the E6600? If so I would remove that POS, remove their thermal paste.. Then, put some AS5 on and one of these...

I believe you just have the one Rear Exhaust fan. You can open your case and look to the front. If you see another fan, then you have an intake as well. If no Intake fan, just buy one (probably a 120mm) so you can get some cool air into the case.

Yeah I just have the one rear fan... I thought it was enough...

anyway, speedfan confirms and agrees with the asus pc probe:

My CPU is now stable at 70C and the CPU fan is at 1700RPM, not 713... This is still way too hot though correct?

Pull that CPU heatsink and fan out and get a new one... Or reapply your thermal paste...

ahhh actually in retrospect - I believe that I didnt use thermal paste... they had a "Thermal Pad"... which I was told was just as good...

Would it be safe to run my computer at this temp though Until I get the new fans?

I wouldn't run it and who told you to use a thermal pad? Those things are horrible... I wouldn't just get a new case fans, this problem seems to have pissed you off bad enough to the point where you should spend ~$30 to fix it:P You won't regret fixing it with this stuff......

Thermal pads are...not good, shall we say? Either grab a new heatsink and some AS-5, as INTEL mentioned, or at the very least, pull off your current heatsink, clean the thermal pad residue, and apply some generic thermal compound for the time being. Definitely get a front Intake fan some AS-5 though; You'll see temps drop a decent amount.

If you have thermal compound lying around, do yourself a favor and pull the heatsink, then re-seat it anyway. It's possible it wasn't making a great connection to begin with. You may save yourself some $.

thx guys. Gonna re-seat it now and if temps are still even moderatly high, screw it I'm buying the new heatsink and case fan.

edit: can I re-seat it without compound?

Yeah, sure, if you like the smell of fried CPU.... lol jk... No, don't do it, you probably just lost $224 if you do... Compound is a must!!

The thermal Pad is just that - a pad. It should hold it's shape/cohesion, but I've never used them, so I'm not sure. Honestly, if you can get some thermal compound tomorrow, just wait until then. No sense making things more stressful.

Haha, thx for the warning intel Lol.

I'm gonna pick up the paste tommorrow.

One thing I'm wondering is I just dont see any space in the front of my case for a fan... The whole front is loaded with drive bays...

you'll be able to pull off your front panel. the fan will install in front of the drives. It sounds weird until you see it, but you should be good.
