24/7 CSS Server.

I was thinking, should I leave my CSS server on, 24/7?

Like turn it off when I need to add a map or something, but its getting more serious then I thought it would.

People are asking if they can join the servers clan and stuff.

I am working on making a forum for the server, on the web page.

Since its home based, will I be facing any issues? Any vulnerabilities?

Thanks.

If you have people playing on it during the night then why not? However if you don't have many people on, and no one on at night, I wouldn't bother.

Server is not up at the moment.

Its been on most of the afternoon. I am currently setting up the Motd and in game adverts.

Its also set up on a static IP.

If I tell you the IP, and depending on when you read this again, the IP could have probably changed.

I am working on disabling it.

PM me or IM me.

Then, I'll give you the IP, so you can bookmark it.

Yeah that'll be great to have it 27/7...

I'll be there every time I go on CS:S.

I thought you said you had a static IP for the server?

But that would be great if we had one with low latency that we could all use.

The IP changes pretty much every time the server turns on.
So it's dynamic then, not static.

And the server turning on shouldn't have anything to do with the IP changing, the IP is tied to the modem, not your computer (unless you aren't using a standard home modem and/or ISP).

I am using the router that my ISP recommend, only cause it syncd with our TV for special features, lol.

But like if I give a friend my IP, and later, they try connecting, it will say connection failed. Then I went to ipchicken and got the IP it showed, which was different from the one I gave him earlier.

Yeah because the ISP needs to register a IP address that will only belong to your server...

Well as I said before, it's your modems IP that is changing, not the one on your server. It's normal for most ISP's to renew your IP every so often, because it saves them from having to purchase more IP's then they actually need. There are a few programs out there to help fix this, I believe DynDNS is one of them.

yea thats dynamic its costs extra for a static IP
Some do, some don't. My ISP actually gave all their subscribers a static IP for a while, but they switched to dynamic and gave anyone who switched an increase in speed from 2.5-3.5Mbps.

I wonder if you could make a DNS redirect and then use a free update service. So g4m3rof1337 .dns.org would point to the ip address. and then the player would enter g4m3rof1337 .dns.org into the connect dialog... hmm
