I can not get into my computer!!!!!help!!!!!

I think I got some kind of virus.

I started up my computer yesterday and I got a window that said log on error with OK or CANCEL as an option, if I hit cancel it would pop back up and if I hit O.K. it qould pop back up. Once I hit eighter one for about 7-8 times then it went to the desktop and everything was loading and then I got a message that the log on file didn't load. I thought it was a virus, and when Norton antivirus poped with a corrupt logon*.*** file virus detected I asked itr to delete and then it asked for a reboot and when I did that now I get.

Is the generic Compaq User log on at start and when I hit the enter key is changes to logging in and right away it goes to logging out and then back to enter password to log in. So I can not get off the log on screen.

I tried the system restore and I get this message:

STOP:C000021A( fatal system error ) The windows log on process system process termintaed unexpectedley with a status of 0x0000000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000_ the system has shut down.

It is a compaq computer 2.2 gig I can get the rest of info latter if needed.

Please help.

I don't think it would be a memory failure, the system sounds like it loads, but he is getting errors. If it was a memory failure it would more than likely not load at all. And he would get some motherboard beeps.

Is this something I cna do with out login on?
Is it like a boot disk?

Does anyone know how to get around the log on screen?

Put your installation disk in and reboot, it should ask you if you want to do a repair. If it is a virus that caused your problems, then a re installation will not do the trick, you will have to reformat and reinstall windows.

Wonder why BSOD's were made... Hmm... :rolleyes:

And FYI, I've run an 512MB good stick, 512MB bad stick, 1GB total, started, loaded XP, errored, 10 seconds later, restarted, next time, BSOD... Then an error like that one...

That is usually not a memory error.

It loads even my backgound picture, but then it goes to a log on screen with the option to select a user and I only have the Generic conpaq user. And like I said before it shows logging in and then it just logs out and stays in the same screen. And it has the sut down option to shut down.
 
o.k. I think we are getting closer.
windows logon.exe was errased if I interpret the erase function of Norton antivirus. Becuase this is the file that was showing infected.

Can I get it back to the hard drive?
 
Can you boot into safe mode? Start hitting the F8 key as soon as your system starts booting to get into safe mode. And keep hitting it until you see the safe mode screen.
 
once I get home I will try it.

I got the screen for safe mode and other start options to start once yesterday but I picked "" last know working configuration"" and it goes to the same error message. I could not get this screen again(I didn't know what F key it was. I will try later today. THANKS
