Upgrading a low end pc to game!

Well, it's a celeron D processor, and it is unknown if the motherboard that comes with that system will support a faster chip, The Celerons are not what you would call a gaming CPU. So that would need to be upgraded.

The Intel GMA950 onboard video card is crap, but you can upgrade with a new card, so that's ok. And it only has 512 of ram, Vista needs at the minimum 2 gigs to run at it's best.

So for $199, you will be getting a case, keyboard, mouse and a harddrive.

Not worth upgrading at all! You would be much better off just starting from scratch and building your own.

That system would be ok for surfing the web, email and that's about it

eMachines are crap machines as bad as Dell. At least Dell is now offering your choice of OS when buying one of theirs new. That will never be anything close to a gaming system since it lacks too much to start off with. Just for a start you are most often hearing those with 2gb of ram and a much larger power supply for powering one of the newer model video cards available.

For a gaming machine you will spend far more trying to upgrade that then you would building a new mid range case adequate for running any of the games out. Prebuild systems seriously lack when it comes to seeing a good gaming system as it is. Those like Dell and even Gateway tend to be at the bottom of the barrel quality wise. I ismply have to state the simple facts here.

Well, it won't be the best gaming machine, but has the potential to be a pretty light gaming machine. You'll first need to get more RAM, you can pick up a gig of ram for like $30 bucks at Newegg. Then you'll need a video card. Seeing that the powersupply is probably weak, a 7600GS/GT would be nice. So all in all $120 would make the computer some what gamable, but don't expect any miracles.

i wouldnt recommond getting that...if you could afford something with at least a gig of ram and like a pentium 4 that would be alittle better

The ram isn't a problem as they cost next to nothing, but as for the P4, I think a cheap sempron/Athlon 64 rig would do better. You should check out the post I made where I listed a light gaming rig for about $300, letme go find the link.

edit: ah here it is..

Ok
Well my Pos dell xps 410 plays WOW,UT3,and americas army flawlessy with no lag and it only has 1gb of ram and a nvida 7300le gcard, dual core 1.73 does help but its not the best but celeron d runnig at 3.33 is pretty fast and i would oc it to 3.5 ghz and throw in 2gbs for sure(first upgrade) then get a new proccesor as a second upgrade then a new case and psu.

But do you know if the motherboard that comes with that system will support an upgrade to a different processor?

Well if you know how to overclock and you are sure this is what you want, then go for it.

But I already told you what I think of it.

And yes, it might play UT3 at the lowest settings, but with that onboard video card, I doubt it.

Ok paratwa
well i have little money to spend and this would be a christmas gift and i would upgrade probably the ram and the gcard and then the most exspensive the cpu
but I apreciate your thoughts and i know its not the ultimate computer but it can be upgraded cheap to be decent

One other thing is the version of Windows you plan to run on it. Forget Vista! Plus from what I've seen from working on eMachines the support is crap for them. Those are merely things to throw on shelves at Walmart or other discount retail stores. Once you start upgrading this and that you will still end up paying as much if not more for what you would see in a custom case or better prebuild.

Total is around $316 after MIR before shipping. It's cheaper than the computer you're looking at after upgrades, and it's more balanced.

That's a practical suggestion since at least there you can plan out the best combination for the resources available. :D
