You can buy a decent notebook for a few hundred dollars. If I'm not mistaken Dell makes notebooks for around 600 or so dollars.

I would get the Dell. I have never owned a Dell or a Toshiba, but the school that I go to has an agreement with Dell to get deals for students to get laptops a bit cheaper, and I have never heard anyone complaining about them. We also have Dell computers in all of our labs, along with printers and other peripherals also made by Dell. They seem to be a good value, and work very well too.
