Formatting stops at 30%

When I try to format my computer (booting from XP-CD), my computer goes up to about 30% completion of the formatting, then my computer suddenly turns off without any pre-sign. I've tried it 2 times now, both times the same thing happent. I have full power, and power-cord connected.

Before the two times with failure, I tried formatting it without power cord, but I didn't pay attention to when it stopped then, but then it probably stopped due to having no power left.

I have formatted my computer earlier.

im guessing this is a laptop?

the only thing i can think of is your hard drive is stuffing up.

have you tried installing linux or something just to see if that works?

Yepp, it's a laptop.. No I have not tried to install anything to fix it.. Could this be cause by a virus or anything similar?

well if your trying to reformatt it shouldnt be stopped by a virus. cos it would just remove it.

i will have a look around to see if there are any good programs for testing the drive. what kind is it?

it could also be your RAM, i have seen that lots of times. Download Eurosoft PCCheck. It makes a boot disk that you can use to check your hardware, including your harddrive.

Or Memtest86 (MS :))

I doubt it's the memory though, memory wouldn't interfere at the same place at the exact same time over and over again... and that's formatting the HDD, and it's rarely using the RAM anyways...

Also you could look into getting a USB to Laptop HDD converter and try and format it on another windows pc.

Have you tried using anything like FDISk on it?
