Memory overclocking??? Confused

This will sound like a really stupid question to most of you on here, but any how, here goes. My current fsb is 389 running a multiplier of 9 so cpu is running at 3.5ghz, that is fine, I get that bit. My RAM is rated at a clock speed of 1000mhz effective, it is running 1:1, so 389 (effective 778mhz) so I take it that it is not overclocked, right? Or does upping the fsb overclock the ram some other way that I am not aware of?

I only ask this because I have found it impossible to get it to run faster, I think that the ratio above (4:5) would make it run @ 486 (972mhz effective) which is still 28mhz under the rated speed of 1000mhz. Is there anyway I can just lock the ram speed at 1000mhz?

I'm just really lost, any help would be much appreciated. Oh, and I think I have knackered one stick by trying to get it to 972, voltage has stayed the same through out (2.3v rated).

You are right in saying that running in a 1:1 ratio it's not overclocked. I'm going to venture a guess that your motherboard only supports up to DDR2 800, if so then you would need to manually overclock your memory to get it to the advertised DDR2 1000 speeds.

I believe you can only set certain dividers with your motherboard, although I know the 680i can set the memory speed to whatever the user wants. What you may want to do is either lower the CPU multiplier and see if you can reach the same speed (thereby increasing the FSB and increasing the RAM speed), or try messing with he dividers. You may have to set it higher then what it's rated for, and if thats the case then you should raise the timings accordingly.

Yea, you're correct about my motherboard only supporting DDR2 800, I never thought of that, thanks for bringing it to my attention. Right again about the dividers, I can only set certain ones. I have tried to lower the multiplier to 8 and 7, and the motherboard did not like that at all, it failed to post even when I upped the vcore to 1.55, I have read that this board does not like to go over 400fsb. Thanks for your help any way, much appreciated.

1 of the sticks has got loads of errors on it so I'm sending that one back. Is there any chance that I could have damaged my motherboard aswell?

If you mean damaged you're motherboard by using RAM that had errors, then no it shouldn't effect it. It's possible that you just got a bad stick of RAM, are you able to run the single stick at a higher speed now?

I have managed to run the working stick at a higher speed and is stable on orthos for over 2 hours so thats good enough for me at the moment. Unfortunately I had quite a few blue screens when using the stick with errors, during one of these I was doing a virus scan and in the middle of doing a registry clean. Nothing seems to be working right now. Nothing will uninstall/ install, I keep getting messages about user account control. I really wish I had stuck with XP, Vista has been nothing but trouble. As for the ram, gona send it back (again), as this is the third stick to go now, gona get some ballistix. Thanks again for your help, I'm off to do a clean install, great fun, lol.
