Computer On A TV

hmm, this is a tough decision. I mean I really dont use my DVD player in my room that often (I have a DLP HDTV in my family room) So its not like this will be my main DVD player. I might watch a DVD once a month while someone else is on my family room TV. Also, i thought it would be fun to play some games (like on addicting games, and Stronghold 2) on my TV. Will games like these looks good? I mean, i would like a video card, because I could also do other things, but if there really is a big difference in DVD quality, and Computer Games looks like junk, then ill get a DVD player.

Cleric: Do you think the difference is that noticeable that even if i rarely use my DVD player, the benefits of being able to play games, go on the internet, etc on my TV are not worth it? Thanks alot

It won't be worth it. I had my PC hooked up to my 20" CRT TV via S-video and I could barely even read anything. I would go with the DVD player, or save up for a new HDTV so you can connect with VGA or DVI/HDMI.
 
ok, well i was a bestbuy looking at TV's and i decided just to get one soon after Christmas, when im getting the video card. Ill just pick a card that comes with the S-video to HD cables right? Or is there a better way. Monk3y said connect with VGA or DVI/HDMI. Whats is that? I mean like how do they hook up differently that S-video to HDMI

Possibly something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889112006 . THat has Component inputs and VGA. I wouldnt know which to use.

With that TV and graphics card, you could simply run a VGA cable from the card to the TV and get a great picture (alot better than S-video).
 
ok, i decided on getting a Vizio 32" VX32L. Im planning on connecting them with the Video Card's DVI output to the TV's HDMI port.
 
Also for using just regular TVs as monitors, normal day-to-day stuff will look horrible but since DVDs are very low resolution videos, they look fine on TVs.
 
monk3y. Is hooking it up best throught VGA? Im gonna need to buy the cord, so i might as well get the one, which gives the best quality.
 
doesnt matter, they are both capable of delivering up to 1080 resolution. some people argue that DVI (a digital signal) gives better picture quality, but i have never been able to see a difference.
 
Depends, Cleric. Bigger TV, you'll notice it. Sitting close, you'll notice it.

My opinion is that the home theater PC is an all-or-nothing deal. Unless you're willing to go all the way, forget it.

What I would do is just get a nice LCD monitor for the computer. 22" will be fine for watching the occasional movie. And then a TV tuner card can let you watch TV on it.

Either one would be fine. If you can get an HDMI cable and DVI to HDMI adapter cheap enough it would be the way to go, but VGA would also do the trick.
