ok, my friend wants wireless. right now he has a high speed connection. and he'd like the signal to go throughout the entire house. so what exactly does he need to have. an adapter card and a router?

you need an access point or wireless router to get WiFi in your home. How big and old of a house are we talking? If its stone and marble with lead in the walls, you may need to run several APs (assuming it is also large) to get coverage through out the whole home.

its not a large house. make of brick and wood. i'm assuming the wireless router needs to connect to their modem. and his room is directly below it. so, coverage wont be a problem. any brand, or model suggestions?

Linksys or Buffalo are my preference for routers. Buffalo have nicer hardware specs, some of them have 32MB of memory in them, which is a lot for a home router.

You going to buy locally or online?

ok, thanks. 1 last thing. is it easy enough to set up that i can do it, or should i get a trained personnel? i can put the card in the pc and install the driver just fine. but, what about the router. my friend's parent's want a WEP key so no one can access thier signal.

It's simple enough to do yourself. You basically just install the software and plug in the router. Download the latest drivers/firmware and that should be it. To put a password on (WEP key) you just enter your router's configuration. On a linksys, for example, you just type 192.168.1.1 in your browser window and then enter admin as the password and you're in. Go to the security tab and you'll find it from there. It's not difficult.
