Internet Speeds

I'm sure this is a very noobish question, but I'm wondering why I'm getting slow speeds, even though I'm getting lots of bandwidth.

when I download a file, my DU meter (an application which tells me how much internet i am using) says I'm using around 1Mbps, when the file I'm downloading only gets around 150kbps. When the download finishes, the internet usage goes back to 0kbps.

I'm wondering what I can do to make the amount of bandwidth I'm getting actually apply to my downloads. Thanks!

I'm wondering if the application you are using is reporting the bandwidth used in Bits, not bytes. A 1 Megabit connection would deliver a 150Kilobyte download speed.

Actually a 1 meg connection would only give around a 100kB download. Maybe the OP is on a 1.5 meg connection?

Well, a 768kbps connection maxes at 90-100 kb/sec. So, 130-150 sounds about right.

You have a 1 megabit line, im guessing its DSL. Thats what the speed should be at.

Well I say your luck i have 6D and 512U and my speed test are giving me 6384D and 412U and when i DL a file i max out at around 312 kb/s .. which is what i expect from a 3megs line... which i also don't know how to get my full speed to get directed to a single file, but if i start another firl, i can also get two files running at 312kb/s maybe opera slow file transfer or something..IDK

The max theoretical from 768 would be 96kB with no overheads. I would think 80 would be the max realistic download speed tho. I suppose it's going to be a matter of whether you are measuring total kB throughput at the modem or actual kB data download to the PC.

No matter what, tho, you can't get more than about 125 kB theoretical maximum out of a 1 meg feed. There just ain't enough bits :)

Max expected kB should be about the line kb/10 in practice - give or take.

I have a 4meg line, so I should be getting around 512KBps Down, however i usually get anywhere from 600-500, constant. Depending of the noise on, and quality of, that line, I can see him getting the extra 20KBps or so no problem.

I never get the speed I am supposed to get. I have cable and live in a Rural area. I am supposed to get 15 MB's downstream but at best I get 11 MB's sometimes as low at 3 MB's. Its not a problem though since I can play multiplayer games well with the speed I get, downloads fairly fast, get decent speeds with streaming video/audio, and webpages load fast.

If you are using a router check to make sure it isn't screwing you, recently I been having problems with my router. Luckily it is working fine now, for now. Consider plugging your PC directly into your modem and doing a speed test on Broadband reports. It is likely your not getting the maximum speed from your ISP.

BTW, are you using Cable or DSL?

Actually if you are using DSL chances are you should be getting close if not exactly the speed they said you would get. Unlike Cable you don't share your bandwidth with the neighborhood. Still check it since its not impossible.

Yeah, I have cable, so I don't expect it to be reliable, but is should be somewhere close. I'm sure the problem is in kB to kb difference. The shaw guys sometimes say I'm using too much bandwidth, and the question is: do they measure kB/month usage or kb/month?

Cable isn't bad, its just the ISP you get your service from. When I lived in NY I had Optimum Online and it worked without problems. When I moved I switched to Pro Log, also gave me good service. Neither gave me the exact speed they advertised though. Still fast enough to do nearly anything.

Im on 4MBps but only get 2MBps using speedtest....but my downloading speeds vary. Usually i can get 250 - 350kb/s but sometimes freezes wifi router if i keep it too long. When downloading new updates for my programs i sometimes get up to 500 - 900kb/s which doesnt make any sense to me cause 4MBps is the fastest line they have in my area as we wanted faster.

Also weird is that we have 5 computers always connected and mine seems to always hold all the internet speed (everyones has slow internet except mine if im running a download)

I have 10,013Kb/s down and 924Kb/s up. I'm not sure how good that is. DSL reports compared it to others with my connection and it says I have 33% better download and 11% better upload so that's decent I guess.

It's 10,013 kbps = kilobits per second.

8 bits in a byte = 1251.625 KB/s.

10,013 / 1024 = 9.7795 Mbps

And don't rely on any test sites. They simply don't test long enough to come up with a real world result.

Like this:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 13930 kbps (1741.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1939 kbps (242.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

I can get 1500 KB/s from my news server for maybe 25 seconds... then it drops to 700-800 KB/s.

Haha Comcast, your speedboost is so stupid, 30 seconds at best of highspeed downloading. In case I need WinZip in 4 seconds vs 6?
