I had done a CHKDSK /R just now ,a message occured all of a sudden in the boot screen, which states" a disk read is occured" press Ctrl+Del+Alt to restart. When I use the Partition Magic Bootdisk to troubleshoot the problems, the drive letter is missing and accompany with a FREAKY LABEL "A???????????".I add another hard drive ,change to master ,install a new window, for the purpose to take out all the neccessary files from the faulty hard drive. As a result, it is failed !!when I click on the faulty drive a message prompted ask me to format it .The CHKDSK command also won't work because it cannot detect the drive with the lines of freaky label. So is there anyway to change the drive label and fixing the problem?

1. Double click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop until it opens.

2. Then gently click on the drive you want to name just enough until it becomes highlighted.

Note: If you are naming a floppy disk, then you must have your floppy in your disk drive.

3. Then click on the word File, which is contained in your top tool bar area.

4. This will pull down a menu for you to now click on Properties.

5. In the Label: box, type a name for the drive up to 11 characters in length.

Note: If the drive already contains a name simply over type a new name in the Label: box.

6. Then click on the OK button to save your changes and exit the Properties Window.

7.Then close the My Computer Window to return back to your Windows session.

Lool are you sure this is gonna fix the problem?

It won't work , when i try to rename it a message prompted "The volume label is not valid. Please enter a valid volume label."

No, I type exactly what above mentioned "Label : Box" and i try the simple one "Drive".The faulty drive is actually NTFS and without any partition drive, but the partition magic shows that the drive had been divide into 2 part, a NTFS (totally consumed) and a FAT32 part(8GB free). Both are shown in My Computer ,but I could only access the FAT32 one.The NTFS one (which could not accessible & could not change label )shown properly with label of "Local Drive" but the freaky name shown within the Partition Magic. How could this possibly could be ? Is there software to let me force into the drive without any drive label verification ?
