what was your OS before it goes sluggish, recent programs you've installed?? what apps are you running" and pls. post your specs.....

do the basics first...do an anti-virus scan, anti-spyware scan, and registry optimizer scan.
Defrag your harddisk,...for registry optimizer, im using this one...http://www.tune-up.com/ other than optimizing the registry it also offers a number of optimizing tweaks to boost up your comp,....

p.s: Consider adding an extra gig, Vista is a system hog..and so as Norton, Ill opt for AVG instead..

Maybe you can check your task manager, to see whether any CPU consuming or MEM consuming processes shows up. you can also run msconfig, click service and switch off some of them

i think i found my problem, can you tell me? i was using tune up utilities 2007 and this was one of my start up programs :
Intel Common User Interface Module
and tune up said this: used by trojans and virus to gain access to a system. we highly recommend removing this start up entry.

i did a virus scan and it said it was fine ? what do i do I thought intel was ok ?

Ahhh, 54 processes is rather high for the average system. +/- 40 is typical, anything over and systems tend to get bogged down rather quickly. You can Google each process to see what it does and if you can safely turn it off. If your CPU is always running at 33%, that's a typical sign that something is running in the background that shouldn't be. Not necessarily always, mind you, but more often than not.

Also, to limit what programs run at startup, click START, RUN and type msconfig. Go to the STARTUP tab and de-select what you do not want to run. Again, Google anything you are unsure of. Typically, you'll want your Virus Scanning software to run always, but you can toggle the others if you desire.
