Memory Question

Maybe someone here can give me some insight into this. I just installed "cpu-z" on my computer and while going through the memory info. it says that I have 512 MBytes of SDRam, which I do, but in the slots it says different.
Slot 1 - 256 MBytes
Slot 2 - 64 MBytes
Slot 3 - 64 MBytes
Is this normal? Where's the other 128 MBytes?

do you have an onboard graphics? chances are your onboard graphics is allocating 128mb of your ram...pls post your specs,:)

hmmm,...try uninstalling your ram, clean the metal conductors using a rubber eraser, an place it on a different slot,...

It would still recognize the RAM, though, I would think. CPUZ doesn't tell you what's available to use, it simply tells you what you have.

Hmm...I agree, pull out all the RAM and make sure it's properly re-seated.

Odd indeed.

How much does the bios say you have when you boot up and how much does it say in the Control Panel under System

System properties(general tab) and bios both say 512MBytes. However msinfo32 states that there is only 384MBytes of total physical memory and only 227.33 physical memory available.

The 384mb compared to the 512mb is probably what your built in video is using. In your System info. the difference between the 384mb and 227mb just shows how much your system is using of the 384mb, so your system is using around 157mbs of your 384mbs left over after you subtract you video memory.

Well, I shuffled the sticks around and tried every combination and was able to squeeze another 64MB out of it. Still doesn't make much sense to me, but I think my comp. sucks.

You have 512mbs, your onboard video is using 128mbs, leaves you with 384mbs of ram. Of the 384mbs that you have your System was using about 175 mbs to run the Operating System leaving you with 227mbs of ram unused.

I know what you're trying to say, but just by simply rearranging the sticks in the memory slots, the total memory increased from 384MB. to 448MB. and amount available increased from 227MB. to 330MB. Nothing else has been changed or altered other than the position of the sticks.

As far as going from 384 to 448 it sound like you have a auto setting for your onboard video, it will change depending on the amount of the video demand. Depending on what programs your using and restarting the computer will make the available ram amount change
