PCI-E slot question on SLI board

The MOBO i have is in my sig. i am looking to get a new 8800gt but it wont fit that well in my case. its too long to fit in the top PCI-E slot because the front side of the video card will hit my hard drives.

the card will fit in the bottom slot just fine tho.

my question is if i can run a single card in the bottom PCI-E slot instead of the top? or does it even matter?

this might be a dumb question but i don't want to mess anything up

thanks!

PS. how is this for a PSU for a 8800gt?

I believe you can use either slot for a graphic card. It doesn't really matter which one you use as both will run at 16x. Its only when its SLI that they run slower. So yeah, i believe you can put the 8800GT in the 2nd slot.

I'm not sure on your motherboard, but many SLI/CF motherboards have the top slot running as PCI-E x16, however the other slot may be running at 4x/8x electrically, which will reduce performance.

on that note, i assume if the board has 2 pci x 16 slots, say the 680i, then you can use either slot with no difficulties right?

I've never heard of that PSU brand. You want to be careful with things like that, check some reviews about the brand and you'll get to the bottom of things. Hope this helped

usually in the mobo manually it will specify, more often than not when running one card, the top slot is specified as the "primary" slot and the card needs to be there if its a single card setup.

Cant you just move your hdd's down? or are you using all the hdd slots in your case?
