Want to study A+

textbook

What is the best way to study for this? If I pass it my friend might be able to find me a job. How do you take the exam?

I looked into computeach, in the UK. An organization which I read on some forums was a rip off. Too expensive for what it is.

I am studying for the A+ certification also, I have the book A+ Certification for Dummies, it is really good and in-depth. To take the test you have to go to a designated testing facility which is described in the first chapter of the book.

I have an older CompTIA A+ cert. textbook, the uppermost book in that link, very well written, makes reading it less than a chore. I recommend.

Along with a good book you should find a old pc you can tare apart and screw around with. I would also download Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 or VMware Server and then look for trial versions of XP, Vista and Server 2003 to install and mess around with.

could probably get an a+ book from ebay for pretty cheap

besides that, http://www.testking.com has a lot of info on the test itself. but, Test King might not be available in the UK as an option. as for the costs, i don't know how much it is in the UK, but in the US just to take the test is $150 each time you take it regardless of whether or not you fail.

Here is what I suggest to everyone starting out.

1) Go to your local community college's website, and look for a course

2) Sign up for said A+ course (typically around $100 per course, and there are two 1 hardware 1 software)

3) Take the test there at the community college

Typically when you take the course at the community college they give you a voucher to take the test once for free. Considering the courses are typically only $150ish each (300 total for both courses) and the tests are like $100 each you are saving money in the long run by taking the training and the courses there. That way you get all the proper training hands on to pass the test, and once you complete the 1 or 2 week course they give you a voucher to take the test no charge. Its included in the cost of the class.

when did they add a networking test in? There are three tests now? I took A+ about 10 years ago and it was just software and hardware tests.

Oh well, I assume that they offer those classes as well.

Are you talking about Network+ which is a separate certification? The one I took had basic networking questions, but they were in the OS side of the test.

i didn't know Network + was seperate from hardware and OS, but the one i did was more practical more about Lans, Mans etc etc

OK, I think you have the certifications confused. A+ is a base certification which covers basic troubleshooting and knowledge over a broad set of skills. It focuses mostly on OS and hardware, with added things like security and networking and other configurations that you would do inside the OS. Where as Network+ is managing switches, servers, routers, MANs, LANs, etc.

They also have a Server+ cert out now but I haven't looked into it.
