Upgrade from Athlon64 X2 3800+

So Im planning on upgrading my mobo+cpu next year but I want to be looking at some options. What would be a good upgrade from my 3800+? It could be AMD or Intel. My 3800+ has not been overclocked so it runs at stock 2.0GHz...

Thanks for any input :)

By next year AM3 will be old news for AMD. Maybe by then AMD will finally have some quad core models out. With the last build here(939) the FX-60 was the only dual core in that line and the fastest stock model for the board type.

Presently the 6400+ X2 model for AM2 board is 3.2ghz with the 6000+ at 3ghz stock. The best move is to wait until you are ready to build for certain and then work with the newest within your budget to avoid being outdated too fast plus upgrade in the largest increment.

Ask this question again near the end of January, Intel is coming out with new stuff. And AMD quad cores are out, but they suck in comparison to Intel's Quads. If i were you, i'd stick with Intel, until AMD pulls their stuff together to produce a CPU that is capable of rivaling or beating the Core 2's, then it'll be Intel's domain of dominance for a while.

Depends on when next year, as of right now I would tell you to go Intel, but by March and on who knows;)

By next year AM3 will be old news for AMD.

AM3 wont be old news next year, it not even going to be released till late next year.

My X2 3800+ is a 939, what do you mean the FX-60 was the only dual core?

In the FX series the bulk of the models were single core. The FX series was the performance line of cpus there. The fastest of those being the FX-60 was the only dual core model in that particular series. All X2s are dual core.

Apparently the Phenons are out finally but simply not as early as hoped when building in August. The recommended board for those with an nForce chipset turns out to be the Asus M2N-SLI model. http://products.amd.com/en-us/RecommendedMBDetail.aspx?id=12

(gee? and I bought the M2N-E due to seeing 6 sata ports and 3 pci slots.)

The Phenom has been out for a month, and that is old news released before the Phenom AM2+ boards were released the M2N-SLI is not the recommended board. AM2+ boards for the Phenom have been coming out for a month, the 770 and 790 AM2+ chipsets boards and Nvidia is releasing there AM2+ chipset the first of next year.

The recommendation is right on AMD's own site there if you look at the link. That was their recommendation for an AM2 not AM2+ board seen there.

People will often buy the lower priced board if it will run the latest cpu out until they can later afford to upgrade the board itself. For existing build the idea would be to upgrade from a dual to quad core model. That's simple math.

It is going to be hard to compete with the 45nm's coming out in Q1 by Intel. You may have to wait till Feb-March to make the right decision. I heard the new AMD Quad Phenom's are really good for the price. All though, the Core 2 Quad is the probably the best... I think Intel is still really dominating the Market right now so If your like me, and are waiting for AMD to make a beast Quad core enthuaist processor, Id wait.

The initial prices are something to consider as well. When any new series of processors comes out I usually wait to see what happens with them like many are waiting for Vista's SP1 before trying the new version to see the bugs fixed. There's one person known here that won't even touch a dual core let alone a quad core model or a PCI-Express type video card.

What ramodkk is looking for now is advice on a stock build not one for high end gaming or ocing. Choosing a fast stock model when the initial prices come down would be one idea along with building around the makes and models of other hardwares like the board in particular. AMDs have always been good work horse cpus here while others generally only look at gaming reivews in that sense.

Theres still no reason buying a new AM2 board if your getting a Phenom, theres already 69 dollar AM2+ boards on the market and probable in the next month alot more, like I already said if you have a AM2 board already just about any of them will run a Phenom with a bios update. But if there buying both your disserving someone buy telling them to buy a AM2 board and end up later having to buy another board to get the performance they could have had to start with.

I don't have a budget yet, I was just planning ahead but I see that planning ahead with CPU's isn't a good idea... :o

By next year say after Jan. theres really no telling, right now Intel on the top but I,ve been doing this long enough not to judge anything considering whats coming out in the next few months.

January/febuary.. im upgrading you can buy my mobo/cpu :P

I would go with a 45nm and maybe a DS3 motherboard. Well, just wait for then and see what happens :)

Again you got that one wrong. In ideal circumstances the most commonly given advice is to upgrade in the largest leap(if affordable something you missed there) to avoid the need to upgrade again soon after a new build is together.

Some when lacking on cash from the expense of buying the latest high priced video card, hefty supply, newest cpu out with the costs of memory and case thrown on top then look for the lowest price on a board instead of working from the board up.

Usually those are people told that they "have to" have this or that card in order to play a specific game? They usually end up with less of a build by following that reasoning then proper planning once the type of build is decided on.
