My USB slots on my MB have suddenly stopped working. I know its just my USB slots because my keyboard thats NOT USB DOES work, and my mouse and mic that ARE USB DONT work.. so my screen doesnt turn on now because it doesnt detect the mouse.. but while my computer is on and i plug in my mouse the laser blinks once then stays off.. I have no idead what this could be.. i tried replacing the mobo battery, still nothing.. is my MB shot? dead? help me out please! :(

What make and model motherboard are you using?

Have you tried going to control panel and device manager to delete your Universal Serial Device controllers then rebooting and letting windows reinstall them?

Its an Abox motherboard, i have a shuttle computer.

And i cant do that unless the screen turns on. :(

hu? you mean asus or abit?

also im pretty sure your bios will still come up even though your mouse isnt plugged in, you only use your keyboard in the bios anyways

Yeah thats what i thought, but the screen stays black whenever i press enter or try and get into the BIOS... Im beginning to think my mobo is ****ed up and i need a new one?

And its an Abox motherboard, im not that computer illiterate and can recognize mobo brands lol but still not sure what model... i would have to double check when i get home but all it said was Abox. The only reason i have this shuttle is cuz my friend gave it to me.. so i upgraded some parts to the ones i had previously.. everything was working perfectly fine until this happened out of nowhere..

Also, my friend came over and was trying to fix it. When we rebooted the comp, it worked.. but then stopped shortly after and continued with its original problem..

Take the whole setup out and place it on a box or something that isn't electricity conductive. Start it up from there. If she runs, then there's a short somewhere...

What did your friend do?

Abox? Sounds like a horrible motherboard...

Thats a good idea, ill try that when i get home.

And he didnt do anything but disconnect, restart, and it worked.. but when we tried again after it stopped working, it had the same problem...

Haha thats what i said, but i guess its one of the companies that makes those motherboards? cuz it is a shuttle..

How many USB ports does your MoBo have? Are all of them not working or a select few?

If one or two go bad, it could be a sign that your Board is going to fail. If all go bad, it could be the same, but I'd spend the time to check out other possible causes first, such as the drivers someone else mentioned.

All 5 of them are busted...same thing for the 2 in the front.

and if your talking about my MB drivers, everything was installed correctly.

lol. I've seen that before on those things. Pull the power plug out of the PSU. Leave it out for about a minute, then plug it back in and power the machine back up. They should work after that.

Lol really? I figured i already tried that without even knowing it, but i'll try it when i get home and will let all of you know if it works or not.

But what if this isnt the solution to my problem? anyone else help? could i just use a USB PCI card to sub for my busted USB ports?

Well, failed USB Ports are a sign of a Board that's going bad. If it was one or a pair, maybe they weren't installed correctly, or whatnot, who knows. However, since both the front and rear are not working, I'm leaning towards a failing Board even more-so now. How old is the Board? Are there any other problems with it?

PCI USB cards would work, but it patches the USB problem, not solves the root cause. The Board might die tomorrow, or it could last for another 4 years - really no way to tell without extensive testing to see where the problem lies and if it's as simple as bad soddering. If you have the means, it might be less of a hassle to just get a new one.
