Okay, I setup a network, now what?

I went through every step of the network setup wizard to network my laptop and my desktop in the same room with a router. Even as a newbie it was a fairly easy and straightforward process. Well, the first thing that I attempt to do is use the file and transfer wizard. I follow the steps on both computers and when I get to the old computer and get to the page where it says to "select a transfer method", I bullet the "home or small office network button. and then I get an error message that says "the wizard cannot locate your new computer". I look on the new computer and I see a double monitor icon in the lower right hand corner and when I click on that it says I am connected. Please tell me what I am doing wrong. Thank you. Frank

I have never used the File and settings transfer wizard, although you may need to set up a network first.

same workgroup name on both pc's, do you have DHCP enabled on the router

I did set up the network. I have the same workgroup name on both computers. I don't know what DHPC is. Please advise.

ok i have successfully connected 4 computers in my house to share files by dragging and dropping them in shared documents and other shared folders. heres how its done:

1. go to control panel
2. click on 'Network Setup Wizard'
3. use existing connection
4. put in a computer description and name
5. put in a workgroup name
6. turn on or off printer sharing (your coice)
7. click next and it will apply the settings
8. click finish, read the settings if u want
9. then click do more computers. if it askes u to make any disks or usb transfer say no and just say 'just finished'.

then repeat the process on the other computers. make sure the workgroup name is the same or it will NOT work!

once done on both computers if u havn't restarted do so now.

go to my computer. he shared documents folder will have a sharing symbol. u can put files to transfer into this folder.

then go to the conuter u want to receive them and click on network places
then click 'view workgroup computers'
then click on the computer you put the files on
click on shared docs
then drag and drop the file(s) onto the computer

If you want to share any other folder, hard drive or disc drive just post and i will tell you how

hope this helps. if not pm, email or post what went wrong on this forum.

Thank you so much Darth. I can't believe all the time you took to write out those instructions. This forum is the best. I followed your instructions to the T and I am at the point where you say go to the computer and click on "network places" and then click on "view workgroup computers". I can't find either of those. Please advise.

no problem im happy i was some help

ok there are a few ways to find 'my network places'

1. go to start menue and under 'my computer' on the right there might be 'my network places' (sometimes there isnt so dont worry)

2. click on 'my computer' and on the left panel under 'other places' there may be 'my network places'

3. in the address bar type in 'my network places' and press enter

4. click the arrow in the address bar and try and find 'my network places'

ok once you have found 'my network places' its time to find 'view workgroup computers'

before you find 'view workgroup computers' look in 'my network places' and the other computers may already show up in which case you would not need to find 'view workgroup computers' however you will probably need to find 'view workgroup computers' since it is the first time using the network.

in 'my network places' look on the left panel under 'network tasks' the second last one should be 'view network computers'

click on it and all the computers in your network (workgroup) should show up. then follow the rest of the instructions.

if you have any problems please say what they are and i will try and help. if you cant find them i will be very happy to send you screen shots of where they are.

hope it helps!

Thanks for you patience. Yes, I can see the other computer. It is my old computer(the Laptop). When I click on it I get the error message that the laptop in not accesible. Now, when I do it the other way around it works fine. In other words I can access the desktop from the laptop.

ok this could be a firewall issue. if you are using windows firewall go to control panel then windows firewall then click the exceptions tab

ake sure file and printer sharing is checked. do this on both coputers. now try accesing both fro both coputers (laptop from desktop and desktop from laptop)

when u try and access and it doesnt work check the other coputer for a message saying it has blocked access. then say 'unblock'.

if you dont use windows firewall u can teporarily disable the firewall u have and put windows on

or

tell me which firewall u have and i will see if i can find out how to put exceptions in it.

if by putting the exceptions still doesnt work try teporarily disabling both firewalls and try accessing the. if u can its a firewall issue (maybe a different exception) and if u cant its something else.

hope this helps

if not just post the problem

I already tried disabling both and it did not make a difference. I will try your suggestions again, just to make sure I did it right. Thank you.

I think you have to turn on "file and printer sharing "

also since there is not a domain controller for authentication, for workgroups, the pc you are trying to access needs to have your log on account on it unless you use the pre-shared folder that everyone can access to.
I would also recommend turning off simple file sharing

by doing what i said he can access file sharing from on e just not the other. it sounds like a firewall issue.
