How to I turn that area back on? I was using tweak ui and I think some setting got changed. Is there somewhere in the registry where I can turn it back on? Or any software to get it back?

XP or Vista? There's a slight difference seen with the Start task bar's properties. For hiding or unhiding icons you simply right click on the task bar and click properties to see the customise button in XP and notification tab in Vista. Each item has a drop down menu of always hide, always show, and hide when inactive. Tweak ui most likely set them to always hide.

When you right click on the taskbar and choose the properties link that will bring a two tab screen for the taskbar and Start menu there. At the lower right of the taskbar section look for th customize button to go into the system tray notification area. You don't use Tweak U for this.

That you can remove if you are having problems with it with the uninstaller or in the add/remove programs section in the control panel. You may have seen a bad install or bad download where some part of the utility was incomplete.

One idea for repair other then unloading processes with the task manager and restarting each program to see icons refreshed is trying the UnPlug'N'Pray tool that disables the universal plug and play in Windows. You can download that free from http://www.grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm

Have you used the msconfig utility at some time to disable startup items? Even with the box to hide inactive icons left unchecked look at the customize button in the right click properties section of the task bar seen there to see if any are set to "always hide" besides seeing if any startup items were disabled.

If you running in the selective startup mode with a minimum of items autoloading and some set like the volume control to remain hidden that would be the first thing to look at there. The fact that the clock is still shown on the taskbar there suggest that icons were auto hidden by the Tweak UI settings.

Yeah. I'll check out my msconfig. I might have turned something off.

I'll also double check Tweak UI and see if it gets turned on or not.

At one time I tried out the Tweak UI program and probably simply dumped it like I do with so called "OS tweakers". Some of them start getting in the way of how I might custom set things here when they seem to want to take over your options.

But look at anything you may disabled anyways since items in the startup and services tab seen in the msconfig utility can always be re-enabled. If you should make an "oops!" at some time you can always boot up in safe to restart a system process if you should accidently disable a background service. That's why the hide MS services box is good thing there.

check this:
go ctrl+alt+del
task manger and check the process expoler.exe is running.
it works everytime or if it does not for a weird reason restart it.
The computer.

im not sure thats what he was describing there windowsvista... i think he means the small area on the right of the taskbar... where the clock is

The most like problem is probably from seeing like a bad install of the Tweak UI tool or something went wrong with it later causing havoc with the system tray notification area maybe even having effected a registry value. The clock being displayed shows most of the functionality is still being seen since that being displayed is also one the options found in the tackbar properties>notification area tab.

One of the good old tweaks ftom kellys-korner. You won't find any viruses or adbots there. Those are simply repair tools for the XP registry.
