Low budget dual cpu motherboard.

Hi,I have 2 intel pentium III cpus just lying around from previous computers..One is 1.0 GHZ,and the other is 866 MHZ,both have the same voltage and actually came from the same compaq deskpros, just different speeds..

I was wondering if I could buy an Intel STL2 motherboard and use those processors I have on there? would that give me 1.833 GHZ?

Also would i be able to run a non server program with that? say windows xp home?

Will the compaq power supply (deskpro 135w) handle the dual processor motherboard ?

Will it be decently fast?

I wanted to experience the dual cpu without spending alot..This motherboard is around $30..

EDIT..Will that motherboard fit in my full size tower atx?

here are the specs from the website, thanks in advance.

Intel STL2 Dual Socket 370 Server Mother Board w/VRM & LAN

"The STL2 motherboard's scalability provides the performance needed for today's unpredictable e-Business economy. It supports up to two Intel Pentium III processors with 133MHz system bus and six PCI slots. Two of the PCI slots are on an independent, 64-bit/66MHz PCI bus, which provides added I/O throughput. Additional server technologies include the Intel PRO/100+ Fast Ethernet Controller, Ultra160 SCSI storage, 4GB of PC133 ECC SDRAM memory capacity and Intel server management."

lol i wouldn't even waste my time with that kind of system. might as well just spend a little more money and get a newer one to experiment on. dual-cpu's aren't that much different from single-cpu boards

Then don't waste his time posting in his thread.

Thanks for your responses but my questions weren't answered.

I don't much about these dual cpu's and server type motherboards so all help is appreciated.

what the first post'er was trying to get across was that it will inevitably be far cheaper to simply build a computer, and that the two processors together will not give you the desired high performance you might be thinking about... the fact is that those two processors on a motherboard would still probably not beat even a very low model for a socket 754 amd board...

is it because of the low bus speed? (133MHZ)

I do notice alot of the newer motherboards, even the cheaper ones have atleast 400MHZ bus speed and most average around 800..Although the thread at the top of the page says most speeds are untrue, and really run slower.

I dont want this to be a gaming computer or anything,Im just tired of it spiking to 100% when I open some of my applications,,thats why I even though about this.

Thanks

even my brothers computer, with an athlon 3400 spikes to 100% when opening applications, virtually every processor thats not dual core will go to 100 even opening firefox, but that does not mean the processors are not powerful, it means that they are using everything they have to run the programs at hand. if they did not do this, then the applications would take far longer to open.

Yes but it seems to stay up there alot of times..

I understand what your saying though,,For example my laptop has an amd sempron 1.6GHZ,it will spike to 100% when opening firefox but go back to 0% quickly then just stay at around 10% while surfing,,sometimes go to 20-30% when I'm on some website that has videos,or flash stuff..but she runs good

I guess I shouldn't have used the term "spiking",I should just say it stays up there..And I'm not one of those people that has a lot of things in the task bar,or has all sorts of systems open that make the cpu hog down..All I have in the task bar is the sound, avast virus, and the wireless assistant icon,,thats all..

Even avast, sometimes when its updating, it will stay at 50% until its done..windows update will make it spike to 90% and stay at around 70%..Making it hard to do anything else without making the system stutter..

I just want to have a decent system,,and I figured with that motherboard I would get 1.83GHZ,,and with my external video and sound card it would be a decent computer that can play a dvd without stuttering. and actually idle at 0% for more then 1sec...Seriously this thing is hardly ever at 0%, it idles at around 7% .

what you're asking for would be okay, but the fact that the two processors you're using are terribly outdated, today's programs will most likely call for much power. what you're wanting to do is like wanting to buy two miata's to pull a trailer instead of buying a mack truck for just a little more money.

I am an idiot.

My cousin had the screen resolution set at 1280x1024 and I didn't even realize it until now,I set it back to 1024x768 and she watches dvd quality movies in winamp at 4%..Scrolls down firefox pages quickly to,and only goes to 10%..

Good thing I didn't go out and by something else when it's not needed.

Sorry for wasting a thread

um watching movies shouldn't take up much cpu. i can watch 1080p videos with 5% being used, but my video card is what heats up. and firefox does 0% when i'm running it. neither of those are CPU intensive, how about you try unraring a large file or playing a game or something

What was wrong with a higher resolution? I'm slightly confused.

And my cpu could be working at 90% for all I care when watching a movie, as long as it's smooth
