Hard Drive Problem

I bought a 500 GB External Hard Drive and it was working perfectly fine. Then one day, it'll connect and say that it connected, but it won't show up in my computer. It shows up in the Device Manager, but only as "WD" when it worked it had numbers after it. It doesn't show up under disk management.

I connected it internally and my computer booted very very slowly and then decided to BSOD for half a second and then go blank screen on me, tried again a few times just for it take a few minutes and then go blank screen on me. Might be Windoes fault, might be the HDD...

Anybody got anything?

If the model is a My Book usb type drive and not one simply being used in a external bay how was it connected internally? For the most part those were designed to be used for external addon for storage type drives and not booting from. If the drive has a defect returning it for replacement or refund would have been the best move.

Western Digital "Elements". It's SATA

can you format the drive?
No, it doesn't show up under Disk Management.

The WD troubleshooting page for that series of drives is seen at http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=IrFSuIUi&p_lva=&p_li=&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_page=1&p_cv=1.130&p_pv=3.219&p_prods=228%2C101%2C219&p_cats=130&p_hidden_prods=&prod_lvl1=228&prod_lvl2=101&prod_lvl3=219&cat_lvl1=130&p_search_text=not+detected&srch_btn_submit=%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0Search%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0&p_new_search=1&p_search_type=answers.search_fnl

The search term used was "not detected" if you have to perform a fresh search for the page with the links on this problem. The first is not detected when using Vista or XP seen there.

For direct contact with WD support you can submit questions at http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc...X3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PW5vdCBkZXRlY3RlZA**&p_srch=1

The main page for warrantees and services is seen at http://support.wdc.com/warranty/index.asp Information found there also includes rma information when submitting a support ticket.

As long you didn't tamper with the original usb plug and wiring you should be able to get it replaced or reparied under manufacturer's product warranty if found defective. Shipping will cost however. The pulldown on the system and failure to be properly detected in Windows is usually a good indicator of a bad drive ot start off with.
