Ok new question, are intels new procs worth it?

So does anyone have any clue when intels penryn is suposed to be released? I've searched google(kinda, probubly missed it), but can't find anything

Actually you're wrong. The Yorkfield came out in November which is a 45nm quadcore desktop cpu. The Penryn is a mobile laptop cpu (45 nm) of which the earliest models are scheduled for Q1 of this year 08.

Edit: Also the Penryn is a dual-core not quad.

Penryn is the name of the new line of processors using a 45nm process based on the Core 2 architecture. The QX9650 (Core 2 Quad Extreme) was released at the end of 2007, but the rest of the Penryn line-up is due in January 2008.

However, Penryn is also the name of a specific processor in this line -- the mobile Core 2 Duo. But when people use the word "Penryn", I assume they usually mean the entire line, not just the one specific mobile CPU.

Here's the breakdown of Penryn:

Wolfdale-DP: dual-core Xeon
Harpertown: quad-core Xeon

Yorkfield XE: Core 2 Quad Extreme
Yorkfield: Core 2 Quad

Wolfdale: Core 2 Duo

Penryn-QC: mobile Core 2 Quad
Penryn: mobile Core 2 Duo

You are getting caught in the complex intel problem of family names and cpu names Im sure intel do it on purpose
Penryn is the name of the entire family of 45nm cpus on the core architecture, within this family are desktop and laptop cpus. The desktop cpus are called yorkfield and wolfdale, with the harpertown being a quad core xeon as John said.
So the QX9650 is a chip name Yorkfield of the family Penryn. And it came out in November!

dont worry even the old pro's above get confused. In essence the penryn is a shrunken conroe. However the addition of SSE4 given better improvement than a standard vanilla shrink. Intel tend to operate 2 year cycles, i.e year 1 introduce new architeture, year 2 shrink it, go back to year 1 again.
