Is ATITool any good?

I'm new to overclocking and i started using ATITool to overclock my videocard. I haven't been able to tell if it's working because i haven't overclocked it a significant amount. ATITool has 6 basic commands:

Set Clock
Defualt
Find Max Core
Find Max Mem
Scan for Artifacts
Show 3D View

I was wondering if "Find Max Core" and "Find Max Mem" can be trusted. I ask because the first time i tried them they just keep rising it slowly until my card starts humming somewhat loudly, it makes me on edge .

Just looking for some feedback on the program and which programs seem to be the best for ATI cards. ATITool also doesen't show me my cards temperature or anything, i don't want to push my card to much it's all i have for now.

You can use it, but I would manually raise the speeds and scan for artifacts at the same time. Once you start to get artifacts lower the core/memory speeds down a little.

What video card do you have?

The humming is where the temperatures increase, thus telling the fan to increase speed. When you see artifacts, you hit your max.

Do you have the latest ATI tool? Because it's a bit weird that it doesn't show your temperature, after all, you have a ATI Card.

Try to download This ATI Tool. It works for the most recent cards.

@other members: When the artifacts pop-up, isn't it too late?

How do you know he as an ATI card? And not all cards have temperature sensors.

Not necessarily, if they are only some minor artifacts you can usually lower the clock speed down before the system locks up.

I assume with this sentence he has a ATI-card.

Ah, it seemed like you were just assuming, since I never saw him say what card he has exactly.

What are acceptable Video Card Temps? I idle at 61 degrees. That's high no?

I lost my defualt overcocking cd which probly had a temperature desktop as well, but my card is the 9600pro.

I know it's well out of date but i'll upgrade when i have enough money to get a completely new rig, for now it's OCing what i have.

Thanks for the information so far, i'm trying out the latest version of ATITool but it doesen't work. I'm not sure if it's my card, or if it doesen't support Vista (i know vista sucks, to lazy to reformat.) but whatever it is i can't seem to fix. Every time i open AITTool it says "ATI Overclocking Utility has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working Correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

so i'm still looking for a way to monitor temperature and perhaps a better tool then ATITool if anyone thinks they know one. Also Chris i've heard people saying 50 is hot so i'm pretty sure yours isen't running at an ideal temperature.

Are you referring to your 7900GT? If so 61C is a bit warm for idle, but it's the load temp that really matters.

I uninstalled it and blew some dust out. Now it idles @ 51C and hits 72C for load temp.

That any better?
