Completely Starting Fresh

Hi all! I am new here so I thought I'd start with a post! I have a Compaq Presario that's three years old. Long story short, I like to do a lot of video editing (AVID, 3D graphics etc.) but I am also a semi-serious gamer. Somehow after just three years, it's allready outdated and can't run any even remotely powerful programs. (The most powerful game I can play smoothly is Age of Empires II! :D) I know a little bit about what is out there, and I'm not looking for a specific price, just the best value. I wanted to get some expert advice on where to start. I don't even know what brand would be the best. I am hoping to get something with at least Core 2 Quad, 3GB RAM, 1GB bus speed and some form of an NVidia GeForce card. Is that even the best way to go? I also can't have Windows Vista, as the AVID program I have is not compatable with it, or I at least need something that let's me switch between XP Pro and Vista. (Do they even make something like that?) I appreciate any help I can get, as I'm sure you guys are much more experienced than me. Thanks in advance for your help!

i don't have a set budget but somewhere in 1000-1500 dollar range would be nice but like a said, i just want the best value. is OS something like Vista or XP? if it is, then I would like to have XP pro, I don't need, speakers, mouse, keyboard, or monitor. thanks for the fast response!

thanks for all your responses! and thank you for giving me all those options of building my own for under $1200. However, I am going to say that I do need a pre-built one as I have no experience building my own.

Prebuilts will get you NOWHERE near the one I built. Their $1200 budget doesn't give you that GFX, good case, nor large HDD. Nor that Q6600 either.

Remember, I have not included a OS. Add that on your own, or just use your origional one.

actually, i looked up all of those components, and I think I will build my own. You oscaryu1 are a genius for finding all those parts for so cheap! I think that's the way to go. (I do have some other parts from another computer that may work in place of some but still that was a huge start.) Thanks again!
