If your going to use a 64 bit OS, use Vista 64, it's the most stable and widely supported. XP x64 doesn't have very many available drivers like Vista x64 does. I have had no problems with Vista x64, I really like it.

If your hardware isn't too old, Vista x64 should work fine for you. What are the other components in your system?

it's a brand new system, i was about to load my old 32-bit xp pro onto it, but decided to get some help first.

athlon 64 X2 5600+ dual core 2.8 mhz 2mb cache
asus m2a-vm mobo
500Gb sata hard drive
4Gb ram pc6400 800mhz
500W PSU
old sony dvd/cd rom (from previous rig)

then once i have the OS installed i'm gonna import my small 40GB hard drive in as a back up, and my SB Live sound card so i can use my cambridge soundworks 5.1 dolby surround sound system. and soon, my replacement video card will arrive in the mail....geforce 7600GT 256 DDR3

All of that should be fine with Vista x64. Especially the system ram. The 64 bit OS will recognize all of it, whereas the 32 bit will not. Asus, Creative, and nVidia will have drivers, guaranteed.

and vista 64 bit is stable? i keep hearing bad things....or are the problems with a different version of vista?
