Clearing a Hard drive

Im trying to sell a older computer of mine so i can pay for parts for my new pc .

First, what do you think is a decent price for the following:

256mb pc100 ram
15 gig hard drive
850 mhz cpu
basic cd-rom drive
250 watt ps
Keyboard, mouse, and 17 inch crt monitor.
Windows xp installed.

Second, how do i clear everything completely off the hard drive?

i can't put a price tag on it but to clear your data, simply just grab everything thats yours and "shift+delete" them , i highly doubt someone will actually sit down and recover them

I would say at MOST, expect to get $100 if everything is in great shape (components are nice, case is in good condition, no scratches, working PSU, etc.). *IF* you hand over XP as well (you'd have to buy another copy for yourself or go with another OS for your new Build, though)...I'd call +/-$140. Honestly, though, that would be a best-case scenario, and realistically, I think you will only see around $90-$100 for it - the component are simply too old, rapidly becoming obsolete, and newer/better/faster parts are getting cheaper and cheaper.

By 'clearing everything off the hard drive', do you mean simply removing your files but keeping XP installed, or do you want to completely format it? Honestly, I'd go with formatting the drive, then doing a fresh install of XP. Reason being, if you ever kept bank records, credit card info, passwords, etc., if you just delete them, it's relatively easy to get the info back and use it for less-than-kosher purposes. It's still possible with a format, but much harder and generally not worth it.
 
Forgot to mention before, but instead of selling it, have you considered wiping it clean, reinstalling XP, and donating it to the Salvation Army, a church thrift shop, or a local firehouse? Any of them will be able to see that it gets to a person/family that needs a system, but cannot afford anything. It may be old, but when you have nothing, anything is an upgrade.

lol i seriously wouldn't pay more than $50 for that old comp.

as for the HD, just format it by putting on windows boot CD and delete all the partitions on that HD
 
I understand that nobody here would want to buy it, I wouldnt want to buy it for myself. I was thinking of selling it to someone that doesnt have any major use for a computer. Like just something to surf the web and e-mail on. Not for gaming or media or projects you know?

And clearing the hard drive, i mean deleteing everything completely off of it. Once that's done, I planned on installing xp on it and trying to get rid of it.
 
Well i think no one will buy this computer its very old ...... And i don't think there is a hard disc of 15 g.b ....
