I have a had an disturbing problem with MY lightscribe double layer 16x DVD (+/-)RW / CD-RW writer combo which worked perfectly until I accidentally restored MY system (system restore)... ultimately deleting everything then starting back to the factory conditions. Dont ask how I did it (I know it was careless stupidity)
So now MY the computer can read and play DVD movies and CDs, butt it cannot even read a blank DVD!
within "MY COMPUTER", drive E: always states that the "use space" and "free space" left on the disc is always zero.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO MAKE THE COMPUTER *and all programs within it* BE ABLE TO RECOGNISE A BLANK DVD-R, +R, ETC.?

COMP MODEL: a819n
HP PAVILION

CD and DVD drives cant read a blank disk, there nothing there to read. If you restored your sysyem and this is XP it does not have built in DVD burning. You will have to install some type of burning software.

mine had the same problem, i had to buy a new dvd burner, after a while the laser on them moves out of position, might not be that, but that was the problem when mine wouldnt read blank dvds or cds. hope this helps

Actually, I'm sure XP Media Center Edition does allow for burning of DVDs without third party software, and after some research it seems that Windows XP SP2 does too.

Given this information, I would guess that the most likely problem is that when you reinstalled Windows, you went from a version that could burn DVDs to an older version that cannot. When you restored, did you use the disks that came with the computer, or a different Windows disk?

Another problem could be the media you are using. While I haven't encountered this problem myself, I have heard of certain brands of DVDs not being compatible with certain burners. Before the restore were you using the same DVDs that you are trying to use now?

Finally, if the problem started immediately after a restore, then it is unlikely, however possible that the problem could indeed be a failure of the drive itself.

Blank unused disk show 0bytes. I just put a blank DVD-R-DVD+R- DVD-RW and a CD-R in both of my burners and all show 0bytes when there blank! What burning software are you using because XP does not have built in DVD burning. If you put a Blank DVD in a burner using XP it will show inaccessible till you load a DVD burning software.

WHEN I restored I did not use any discs at all
I simply pressed F10 when booting, clicked system restore, THEN BAM!
DESTRUCTION!
everything else is working except the burner
IM guessing the restore used the comps firmware to put back everythin...
