hi i have two hdds of the same make and size 400gig each and i am running xp pro one and vista 64 bit ultimate on the other in a duel boot.
i now want to run a raid 0 but i dont no were to start on the mobo cd there is a jmicron sata raid utillity. i dont have a floppy disk where do i start and do i need a floppy drive?

Well first it would erase all the data on both drives, so both your current OS's will be gone.

You don't want to use the JMicron SATA RAID controller, you want to use the onboard RAID controller. When you first boot up your PC, you need to go into the BIOS and change the SATA mode from IDE to RAID. Then after you restart press CTRL+I to enter the RAID utility.

However most likely you will need the RAID driver to install XP.

Hi, dual booting shouldn't be a problem because your array should be able to run multiple partitions, however I have to ask exactly why you want to configure RAID 0?

A few facts and misconceptions about RAID may change your mind. In the end it is up to you, but I think you should at least know these things before proceeding. First off, RAID 0 offers pretty much no performance increase on basic usage, internet surfing, office productivity and gaming. It will offer increase in pure data throughput. So, if you are editing or managing huge files that are many gigabytes in size you will see a very nice performance increase. it also reduces the stability of your system. If one drive in the array fails then your whole system fails. Yes, for windows XP you will need a floppy disk because the installer is retarded and can only read RAID controller drivers from a floppy disk. The other option is to slipstream drivers in a SP2 installer disk, which can be found how to via google.

In my opinion its not really worth it for end users to run RAID unless its application specific, like video or audio editing or anything else that would make you manipulate lots of data at once.

thanks for all your help what i want to do is run vista 64 bit on raid 0, i no i will lose the o/s and will have to reinstall but i do have a norton ghost backup image would i be able to use that? also will i still need a floppy with it being vista?

I don't believe so, since the original image was from a single drive, although I'm not 100% sure on that.

You can dual-boot with a RAID array as well.

so i would have to start a fresh but thats not a bad thing i still need to no if i would need a floppy drive to put the raid drivers on {push f6 etc} or if that is not needed when using vista.
