Dangerous temperatures???

I am a little concerned about how hot my laptop is running. It is a HP Pavilion dv2600 (Intel t7500 (2.2ghz), 2gbs ram, 34bit Vista, 160 HD).

I just turned on my laptop and the two concerning temps that Speedfan is showing are 51C and 58C. The HD temp is usually pretty regular, right now it is at 31C. And my ram usage is around 50%.

The temps above are pretty normal for my comp, but last night they where around 68C! And all I was doing was streaming a video, the ram usuage was around 45%.

Should I be concerned about these temps?? When I first bought the computer about 3 months ago it was not this hot.

I was going to buy some new thermal paste (artic silver 5) but someone told me that I would not be able to access my cpu to apply it. Is that true?

i personally would not open the laptop, i believe if you open a laptop it voids the warrenty, not sure on the temp, from what i hear i dont think that the temp should go over 65c

you really don't want to screw around in a laptop... even if you've build may many desktops. laptops are very tricky and every one of them has a different layout.

try running a couple of futuremark 3d loops and see how hot it gets.
68c isn't abnormal for a laptop but if it gets above 75-80c then you need to take a look at it. i.e. clean it up or something.

Alright, where can download some of these?

if those are idle temps in ambient room temperature then that's not that bad but can be improved.

i'd look for a couple of things. one is when you restart/start the computer what is your cpu load? if it's 50% (1 core being maxed) then find and kill that process in task manager. temps should drastically drop.

another is have you been messing with the fan controls? normally in power settings you have an option to decrease/increase the fan speed

have you been putting your laptop on your bed, carpet, etc? dirt may have gotten in. solution is to use compressed air

about your cpu... you can access the cpu but the method differs for each laptop. some require removing the keyboard and other equipment. my sony sz 320 has a cover on the back that leads directly to the cpu/heatsink. if you are fortunate to have direct access then go ahead and apply the paste. and at the same time used compress air to clean the cpu/heatsink. my processor had some white goop (i assume is ceramic paste) instead of a sticker. applying arctic silver, some registry tweaks, and undervolting allowed me to have 39c cpu idle

Laptops are a real pain to get into. I have no idea where the CPU is located on that particular machine, but typically they are not user accessible. As mentioned, you will void the warranty and could possibly break something in the process. Even if the processor is accessible by some bottom flap, I still wouldn't advise you messing around with it unless the warranty has run out.

As for temps, they are a bit high but I wouldn't worry too much unless they get to the 60 degree range. It's not uncommon to see a laptop running in the 50's. I know my Averatec would peak around 42*C if I had it on "Cool 'n Quiet". My HP dv6000 with a Turion TL-60(which is going back to Costco tomorrow ) would stay around 42*C.

You may consider getting something like SpeedswitchXP or...well crap, I can't think what it's called... Well anyway, some software that controls your processor. You can lock it at a lower speed, or make it so it's less likely to bump up to it's max speeds. Trust me, I ran my Averatec at 800MHz most of the time and it wasn't even noticeable while browsing the internet and basic stuff like that.
