Setting up static IP address...or do I even need one?

Ive been having some weird problems with my internet lately on Vista Ultimate. Sometimes I log onto windows and I will not be able to connect to our internet (ethernet) so I have to restart and then it will work. Im wondering if it may have to do with IP addresses since now that my sister is home from college we have 4 computers connected to our connection. I know you cant have the IPs connected at one time, but if each computer is set to auto find an IP would this cause a conflict?

How do I set up a correct static IP or what numbers do I use?

No, that shouldn't cause a problem. You can assign static addresses but you will need to know what the DHCP address range is set to. This information can be found on your router (or what on your network runs DHCP.)

You will need to assign static addresses that are outside of your DHCP range.
For example:

If your network uses a private IP like 192.168.1.0, then that would be your network ID. Your router/gateway will likely have the 192.168.1.1 IP address.

Your DHCP pool (range) could be set to anything from 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.254.

You can set the DHCP range to anything that you want. Just make sure to have enough address so your router can issue them to all of the computers/other devices that wont have a static address.

If you set your DHCP range to 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.50, that would give you 49 adresses for dynamic assignment. You can then use 192.168.1.51 through 192.168.1.254 for static assignments.

Does this make since?

Ok, im not good with networks so let me ask some dumb questions.

Where do I find the DHCP information? On the wireless router homepage? (192.168.1.1) or on the modem homepage? (192.168.128.1 I think)

What is the difference between a dynamic and static assignment?

Also, If I have forwarded ports (that dont work because of this issue I believe) I need to point them to the static IP i am using on my desktop correct?

What is the difference between a dynamic and static assignment? Dynamic assignment means that when a computer connects to the network it request an address. The router then issues an address using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.) Therefore, a computer using aquiring an address automatically (dynamcally) might not recieve the same address everytime it connects to the network. Static assignment means that the computer is assigned an address by a network admin (you) and will use this same address everytime it connects to the network.

Also, If I have forwarded ports (that dont work because of this issue I believe) I need to point them to the static IP i am using on my desktop correct? Correct. Like mentioned above, in order to port forward to a specific machine, it needs to have the same address all of the time.

These are not dumb questions. Everybody needs to start somewhere. Does this clear things up?

Alright, excellent. Yes that does clear things up a lot. Ill take a look at it when I get home and see what I can figure out. Does it sound like this may be the cause of my internet connection problems?
