High Pitch Noise

Hi guys,

Well I just built my first computer today with a friend of mine. After many hours of struggling with cords and where to put them, we figured out the right configuration as we think. When we plug the computer in, it seems to make a faint high pitch noise, and when we unplug it it goes away. The computer will not power on :(. We are getting help from his dad on Sunday as he builds many computers, however I think some of you might be able to help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are the computer specs?

Did you use stand offs, motherboard not touching the case, if your Graphics cards needs it, do you have the PCIe power connector connected?

AMD 6000+ X2 Dual Core
ASUS M2NPV-VM Am2 Motherboard
2gb OCZ Gold DDR2 800mhz
8600gt 512mb video card
1 - 250gb SATA Seagate HD
1 - 80gb IDE HD
Nift Case ATX
Nift 500w Power Supply

Honestly, I feel like an idiot about asking but what are stand-offs? Are they spacers? And my motherboard is actually lying on the case screwed on.

The 8600gt doesn't have a power connector that I can see.

Right, the 8600GT doesn't have a power connector.

These are what should be underneath your mothboard seperating it from the case.

BUT some cases do have small raised spots, so no need for spacers

Typical. You used a case PSU correct? This is what happened:

1) The PSU blew when you pressed the on button.
2) The PSU was DOA.
3) The PSU was crap because it came with a case...

Moral - Any PSU included with a case is crap. Period.

I honestly agree :), when putting together your own system a constant and steady source of power is recommended. I would never trust my system with a weak power supply.
 
500W may be sufficient, but seeing as it came from a unknown manufacturer, and that it came with a case, I seriously doubt it will power a Pentium 3 correctly.
 
Yes it did come with the case :/
Luckily its the only thing that I bought locally, therefore I can return it with ease.
Damn. It was even a 500w :'(
 
Yeah, i agree. It sounds like the PSU now.

When buying a PSU, you don't exactly go by wattage, but amps. A "500w" PSU may only produce 20a. While a leading brand's 500w model can produce 40a.

Brands i would stick with: Corsair, OCZ, and most Antec models

20A would be for a 400W IMO. 40A? More like a 500-600W...

I'd go for at least 20A on the 12V. If it's less than that... Buy a new PSU.
 
You can get a close estimate of how many Amps on the 12V rails by dividing the Watts (only the watts on the 12V rails not the total watts) on the 12V rails by 12

But seeing as it's a CASE power supply... The wattage most likely is huge and the amps tiny. Take my eBay 600W for instance. 600W, and lights up. 20A on the 12V rail...
 
But it doesnt have 600 on the 12V rails, plus if its a cheap P/S it most likley will have alot lower watts on the 12V rail.. You only go by the watts on the 12V rails, not total watts. I have a 550 watts P/S but it only has 455W on the 12V rail and I have 38amps on the 12V rail. But I do agree most pre installed P/S in cases are crap.

Turns out it wasn't coming from the power supply, but the motherboard

Whoever said that I needed standoffs was correct. Thank you soo much! We had a bunch of trouble with it, but his dad basically rebuilt it for us.

A new thread will be up about another problem I'm having.
