I got a HP Pavilion dv6000 for Christmas from my parents and I get a wifi signal at my house which is 300 ft back from the road (where I get my signal from), about the maximum range of most wifi networks. Other than that all I have for internet is dial-up. I have to open a window to get the signal then once I have it I cant move from the spot where I am or ill lose the signal. Are there any products that would improve the range of my built in wireless card? NOTE: I already tried a wireless card range extender from my friend and it doesn't fit in my card slot because his card is a "square" shape and the port on my laptop is a "L" shape.

-Thank You :)

ha ha, i bet that would probably work.. the wifi rage extender i posted wouldn't decrease your mobility in your home. It would essentually be like having a wireless access point in a one of your rooms. That link to the laptop extender is a rather neat idea though.

If your current wireless card is inside your notebook using something like that would increase you range a good 10 - 15 feet. In other words it won't help that much.

Ok, so are there any other USB products that would increase the range, and If I were to plug that into my desktop, would it get a signal?

Why don't you just use a thing like AdmnPower suggested. It will give you lots of range in your house. Your laptop will connect to it instead of the router wherever the internet is coming from.

Btw I have the same laptop, it's excellent...

actually depending on the notebook, sometimes those external wifi adapters actually do worse than the internal ones. This is because on certain models the antinna is under they keyboard (in this situation the usb wifi adapter will do a slight bit better) and in other laptops they actually run the antinna up into the corner of the monitor thus getting it higher. In in this situation the internal card will do better than the usb adapter that you're probably resting your arm on top of. Believe it or not, bodies do a good job blocking wifi if you already have a low signal.

Your SOLUTION!

I don't see why you won't get a range expander. That would cover your entire house rather than adding a few extra feet to your ranger. The only reason I can see that you wouldn't want to go with a range expander is if you're actually not supposed to be using the network that your connecting to.
