Planned System, need feedback

Well afterall you may not need 4 gigs in that case. You plan on running Vista? This can be another reason to get some more memory.

4gbs is overkill and you wont even utilize it all without a 64bit OS.

Also chipset has absolutley no affect on the gaming fps if you are not overclocking. After countless tests improvments between different chipset is minimal at best, and that is only after heavy oc'ing

that said p35 or x38 chipset gets my vote for future proof, and drop the extra RAM so you can spend more money on important things, like GPU/PSU/CPU

4GB can be utilized if you're a CADD person or do huge amounts of multitasking. You are correct about the 64bit part though. I would not recommend XP 64bit, as it has many faults, and is not popular in the world of drivers.

The P31 series are another choice to look at. DDR2-1066, 45nm, and quite futureproof.

yeah i know what you mean, but he said hes building a gaming machine, 4gb = overkill

ddr2 1066 is to expensive for the mild increase in performance over ddr2 800, as is ddr3 memory, maybe in the next 6 months though the price-to-performance ratio of ddr3 will increase

No. Gamers can use the additional memory when running high intensity games. Save money by dropping 2gbs of RAM? RAM is so inexpensive anyway, it hardly makes a budget difference. Go with 4gbs, you wont regret it.

There are only 4 P31 motherboards on Newegg currently.

currently no game will max out two gb of RAM, and saving 35 bucks on RAM means 35 more bucks you can spend on a GPU, which to some can mean the difference between an 8800gt and a 8800gts or even stepping up from a 8600 to an 8800 if its a lower budget machine.

and yes even if you are running Vista no game will max out your RAM

that still dosent mean its a good budget chipset to look at, its 30 bucks saved on the Gigabyte p31 over the lowest gigabyte p35, get that with cutting excess RAM out of the budget and Bam you got your self 60 bucks to spend on mroe important things
