Hey,

Yeah well I'm looking for someone that knows the command to open a .tar and .tar.gz file via the ubuntu terminal, It would be great if anyone knows the correct command to do this.

I've tried tar -xvvf "filename".tar, but it didn't work

I asked a friend he said something about I need to be in the directory that the .tar or .tar.gz file is, I don't know what he means by this.

.tar "tar -xvf /location/of/tar.tar" .tar.gz "gzip -d /location/of/tar.gz" then "tar -xvf /location/of/tar"

and also it is like windows there are folders so if you have it on your desktop i think it is "cd /home/username/Desktop

Ahhh, OK. I've put the sources.tar file into the Home directory. I've now done this command,
tar -xvf /home/sources.tar
and it then says "tar: /home/sources.tar: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now"

What am I doing wrong? Please not I'm running unbuntu from the live CD.

Cheers for your reply

When we say location it means were the file is located, To Put the location in, Right on the file, Click copy, Paste were u need to put in the location. DA DAR! also the ubuntu forums has like thousands and thousands of ppl online 2 help

Why not right click and 'Extract Here' ? What are you attempting to use terminal for this task?

I believe the basic install of Ubuntu (even the live CD) has the 'Extract Here' option in the right context menu..
