I want to build a computer to play COD4.

What components would you recommend? Looked on newegg but with the amount of choices I wasnt sure which components to piece together.

I have an old compaq sr1130nx and didnt realize that it wouldnt play the game due to the video card not supporting alpha blending. So I figured it was time to build my own computer unless you have a better idea?

Building your own is the best choice. You can get more for less if you do it yourself.

Just stick around and someone will post some suggestions for a new build for you.

Have you ever built one before?

nope, but I figured it was time to try.

1000 is a good budget. Do you need a monitor? Do you need keyboard and mouse?

Here is what i would do...

CPU: New intel 45nm Core2Duo E8400 series ~185
MB: Gigabyte/MSI/EVGA P35 $100
RAM: OCZ/Corsair 2 gigs DDR2 800 $50
GPU: 8800 GT 512mb video card $250
EVGA 8800GT 512mb
PSU: Antec/OCZ 550watt(ish) $100
HDD: 320gb Seagate $70
OS: Vista Home Premium $110
OD: some DVD drive/burner $25
case: someone else can suggest ~$50
monitor: if you have a LCD, keep it. If not, get a 17/19" LCD like this 19'' ACER LCD $180

Total without monitor/mouse/keyboard : $940

(this summation has neglected shipping and mail in rebates which can easily cancel one another out.)

with monitor and input devices : $1160

as little as possible to get a good solid computer that will last say two years. I'm guessing that means about $800-$1000

I built my computer (in sig) for $530. OC'd to 3.07 stable, that'll last me lots. Especially with DX10...

$I'd spend no more than $800. And wait for the 45nm's, and any other price drops.

you should buy the ps3 I have that game on there and holy crap its intense! 52'' hdtv doesn't hurt either;) Also with the ps3 you can use it to log into the internet and everything. The graphics on that machine are absolutely amazing. It fits right into your price range too, esp. if you only want the 40G its only 399.99 + 5 free blu ray movies when you buy one before Jan 31. You get to select which movies you want, go to bluraysavings.com or something like that. Mine came with spider man 3 and I got 5 other ones that come for free.

can I use the hard drive and OS from my old computer in the new one or will that cause issues? I only ask because my hard drive has 120 gb left and that is more than enough for me. plus I wouldnt have to buy a new OS.

You can use the HDD and OS, but you will need to re-install the OS, because of the new hardware(well there is another way, but I wont get into that right now).

Yeah. Keep your old HDD but deffinatlely format it again with a fresh install of the os. that way you have no problems ie bios and hardware like bigbird said.
