how can i quiet my hdd?

You can't quiet the hard drive itself, however you can add noise dampening material around the hard drive to help lower the noise.

how can i quiet my maxtor 40gb hdd?

thanks

What kind of noise is it making? Normal spinning noise, clicking, vibrating, whirling (have spin, half whistle - kind of like a CD drive)?

How is it installed? Vertical/horizontal; other components around it?

There are some places you can buy insulators for the drive bay to eliminate any vibration. Certain sites also sell soundproofing material for cases, and there some DIY ways that are cheap and relatively easy, if not time-consuming (measuring, cutting, etc.)

its locat near the bottom of my case mounted horizontly and has the slave drive right above it its more of a spinning noise also i made sure that all screws are tight

Spinning noises are normal (to a certain degree) on some drives. How old is it, btw? Sometimes (usually after 2+ years of constant use) the bearing or spindle inside the drive will lose is silky-smooth operation. It's not a huge problem, but it does contribute to a bit of noise.

You mentioned the Salve HDD right above it. Is it in the slot directly above it or is there an empty slot between them? What are your HDD temps? It's possible, though admittedly unlikely, that your HDD is just running a bit hot, but every bit of troubleshooting helps. Would it be feasible to move the Slave up one slot to let more air pass through?

Either SpeedFan or HD Tune will tell you, they should be under 40C as well.

updated temps
main 51
slave 37

also, i was wrong, the slave is under the master, the master has atleast 4 drive bays above it

51C is hot for a hard drive, is that when it's idle or if it's in the middle of a large transfer?

its when im doing nothing like right now, hold on, i need to replace my cd-rw drive, i just snapped the tray right off!!!!!

Well, it could be a few things. The first thing I noticed is that both HDD temps shot up about 10* - did room conditions change at all, heat turned up, computer moved, etc.? What is the fan layout in the system? You may just have a dead pocket by the drives that doesn't circulate air. If possible, I'd also move the two drives apart - give them a bit of breathing room in between.

However, it is possible the HDD is showing the beginning signs of failing. Without seeing it/listening to it, though, I can't be certain.

I hate it when that happens.
