External HD shows up intermittently.

I have a 250 external HD. The drive sometimes shows up in my computer and sometimes doesn't. At times you hear the bingbong, but nothing shows up.
When it does not show up in My Computer, it does not show up also in Disk Management.

Any advice welcomed.
 
It'll be because you're running it off a hub. Some things just don't like it. Give it a dedicated port

That would be my first suggestion as well, especially if it's drawing all it's power from the bus.

I have tried to connect straight to the motherboard firewire port. It semms to work ok, but since yesterday, it has started not showing up again, though you hear the bingbong. If it gets disconnected, should not hear the bingbong twice?

My 120gig external HD seems to work ok with the hub, but my 250gig external HD is may be too big. It even plays up with the firewire connection from the mother board. I have intalled a card with a firewire port that I had before, the 250gig HD seems to work fine now.
