Use virtualdub which I recommend, or another video converting software to temporarily convert to uncompressed, then import.

High quality large is best if I'm not mistaken. High quality large and high quality ntsc are the same quality, but ntsc is a different dimension (720x480 instead of the normal 640x480, ntsc is a little wider and disproportioned). It reduces quality from the original file because of the codec and compression method it uses. Use nero or another video editor to export in higher quality avi in where you can choose the level of compression.

No, windows movie maker uses wmv format+codec only. Use 'nero vision' for that kind of editing & exporting.
