i know this is a noobish question but im not sure what kind of ram to use for the 780i mobo also evga or xfx version?

Simply look at the board's specifications usually seen in the user manual or product information at the manufacturer's site. The specs are usually listed following the list of contents right in the user manual that comes with the board itself. That will show just what memory is supported.

nowadays, ddr2 is almost standard. since it's a newer board, it might support ddr3 too. just look at the specs for it
That's a useful link! I was going to mention that most board manufacturers will have their own list of recommended brands. Asus sees Corsair while Gigabyte sees Kingston and the like.

XFX doesn't make the grade seen with the other companies for sure there. From a good look around the site there you need an account just to find specifications practically.
Yeah, I noticed that. Pretty lame...
XFX and EVGA boards are the same. As far as I know there still both made by Foxconn.
