3GHz trap

when are they gonna get out of the 3GHz trap as i call it in other words when are they gonna start releasing 4GHz+ processers they have been in this for a while now i think 3 years + an the closeest they have come was the Pentium 4 570 @3.8GHz an all that was ,was a 3.2 or something OC'ed

Technology can't cope with such high demands. The cooling would be outrageous to keep it under controllable temperatures. That's why manufacturers started to do Dual Cores. They realize that the computers were still slow because many people were multitasking and didnt really need 4 GHZ for the CPU.

As transistors get smaller --the 45nm process is a good example-- we'll see cooler, faster procs. However, I doubt that we'll see stock speeds > 5GHz. 4, maybe. I've been reading some stuff about getting rid of the FSB and motherboards moving to new technologies. I'm not sure exactly what that means, though.

what about them MOBO that u can put 2 processers on with them if u put say 2 6000+ on a board like that would that be a 6.0GHz quad core meaning better than 1 QX9770

No, you'd be running two CPUs at whatever speed you've assigned them to run. Like, 2 FX-74s at 3GHz.

They run at 3GHz, and yes, you'd have a total of four cores.

Well the P4's @ 3.8GHz perform less then the Core 2's at 3.0GHz, so clock speeds aren't everything.

I wouldn't go that far, although the low end Core 2 Duo's will outperform it.

You can't be serious? The reason the E2140 wins is because it's a dual-core, where as the P4 is a single core.

In games it's about 50/50, the E2140 excels in games that are multi-threaded, and the P4 3.8GHz wins in the more single-threaded apps.

Like Omega said, Clock speed isn't everything. Todays newer processors can get much more done per clock cycle than the old P4's. The Core 2 Duo's are, clock for clock, somewhere around 30% more efficient than AMD's X2's, whereas the X2's are capable of anywhere from 2-4 instructions per clock cycle, depending on software and memory allowances. In contrast the P4's were capable of 1 instruction per clock, HT changing this number nominally.
