good speakers or good sound card?

shouls i get some good speakers or a good sound card made by creative. im thinking speakers, though i am no expert. this is the sound card i was thinking of: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836116024

the speakers i have at home are some old dell that gave some good sound from a very old computer...

other questions, Could i hook up some panasonic radio speakers that ui got from costco to the computer, using a special cable? oi hope you understand the questions, thank you.
 
The first thing to do there is edit your first link since that is for the intended speakers not any sound card. You posted the same link twice. If you are looking at speaker sets in the $45-$50 range, one set of Logitech X-530s open box however could work. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121126R

The Panasonic speakers off of a portable stereo or boon box may work since those are not being powered by the system itself. But what to use as an amp for them? you wouldn't hear anything by simply plugging them directly into the sound card since those don't include amplifiers.
 
You were asking about using spealers from a Panasonic radio. Once you have a good model sound card in you will want a good set of speakers to benefit from the better sound quality then seen over onboard. These are two things that always go well together.

For XP that should work out being an Audigy model there. But for Vista if you have any plans to run that or the next version you would want to go for a model in the X-Fi line at some point. For gaming and serious multimedia playback a good card goes well with a good set of speakers. For basic sound then speakers alone for use with the onboard sound would work there.
 
Well the speakers being 2.1 will work off your motherboard sound, but i have 5.1 sound sytem and that will not work of 'my' motherboard, you have to make sure you motherboard is compatible.

But you also have to thing about the future as well!
 
Most boards now see 5.1 with some seeing 7.1 for onboard. But even with a 5.1 or 7.1 card you can still run a 2 1/2 speaker set. You just won't benefit from the full surround sound effect there.
 
Any 2.1 speaker set will have a stereo input, so any 2.1 speakers will work. These will work, but you might have to buy the cable if you don't already have it. I can't see what connectors this system wants, but it will be easy to get the right cable

I have those speakers and they sound excellent! A few people around here run those and the x-530's, basically the same speakers but the x-530's are 5.1, where-as the x-230's are 2.1 :)

I don't have an add-on sound card, though.. I run them straight off of the motherboard and use the graphic equalizer in Windows Media Player 11 to tune them, since that's all I use for music these days.

I don't see anything wrong with those. You will want good sound if you decide to go for a sound card later.

For players on Vista VLC seems to be the one for audio while MPC is used for dvds. For XP WMP 10 not 11 is used there.
 
Here I pondered on swapping speaker sets since a 5.1 setup is a little awkward from not being able to see the individual speakers separated far enough plus having the wires extended and kind of wrapped around other equipment. I simply grabbed the Z-640s when spotted for a good price at the time.
