Hey, i have an AMD Athlon 2.8ghz dual core 5400+ processor with an AMD cpu fan on top of it.
1 80mm rear fan
2 80mm front fans
1 CPU fan on the processor
What do you guys think would be a good, but safe amount to overclock it?
Did you read the overclocking guide. It really helps, people can give you a ballpark number but you really have to try it yourself, see what it fails around, or think it will fail around, then back it down a little bit to what your comfortable with. I'm new to it to so I'm no expert though.
The fan placement is a really important factor in cooling. My old setup used to take in air from the front (intake) and put it through the back fan(exhaust). Also the Positioning of each fan is imp. 2 (exhaust-intake). You wouldn't want two intakes, this would put ambient air innto the case where it would just build up. Also remember in 3rd grade, we learned that hot air rises... a lil side note: 3rd grade was a really bad yr for me. 9th is going so much better...

Most 5400 and 5600 will do 3.0 without a voltage increase. To go any higher you have to bump it up alittle, if you start raising the voltage keep a eye on the CPU temp.
