what does a spinnable knob on the back of PSU do?

was moving around some comps, and just noticed this. Of course, I had to touch -.- I'm pretty sure it was at the "lowest" position by default, to which I have returned it, but I want to make sure I didn't destroy anything. Thanks.

It's a fan speed controller. I'm pretty sure it's just for the PSU's fans, but I know my PSU has the ability to control fans connected to it. However, it's all automatic and I've never used the feature :P

Ah, yup..that's what it does. So it's a good idea to just leave it on the lowest?

Agreed with above post. If you have a rather large wattage PSU and a lowly system, the lowest setting might be fine. If you're stressing it to its limits... It'd be good on max :)

Well I guess my question should be, what are the negative consequences of turning it up? Could it wear out the fan faster, or just unnecessary power usage?

EDIT: in response to oscaryu1, the PSU is a 460 watt, and the basics of the system are in the sig

Personally, I'd turn it up. Excess heat is more likely to damage the PSU than additional wear from running the fan at a higher speed. Added power consumption is also very minimal. The only real downside is that your PSU will be louder.
