Sluggish Computer (Hijack Log Included)

New Member
I've got a friend who has a sluggish computer. It's a P4, 3.0 GHz, with 1GB of RAM, but acts real sluggish. Also, from time to time when you knock the screensaver off, it closes all open windows. I did a scan with Super Anti-Spyware, but it says nothing found. I've enclosed the HiJackThis log that I ran this morning.

Run spybot
run a full scan with mcafee
run a chkdsk
check to see if the disk needs to be defragged
increase the pagefile if you can... also if he has another drive or partition other than the system... put the pagefile on there.
in your performance options uncheck everything but "use common tasks in folders" and "use visual styles on windows and buttons"
might want to check his ram too www.memtest.org

It all seems clear.
However there is this one entry that is suspicious.
I'd like you to clean it up ( or your friend ) because I've never seen that one before, and I saw many McAffee users.
Anyway, pelase open up your HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.
Place a chek next to theis entry:
O23 - Service: McAfee Application Installer Cleanup (0055581202208418) (0055581202208418mcinstcleanup) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\005558~1.EXE (file missing
Now close all open windows except HijackThis and click Fix Selected.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 4.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

This is all that your friend has to do for now.
There are some entries in startup that can me remobed in msconfig, but I don't believe that can cause a slow computer acting.

when i updated my java update 6 version 4, it also downloaded the development kit, is this necessary to have? its taking up 339mb of memory thats y. thanks.
 
Yes it's necesserry to have, because that IS te necesserry Java update.
Yes, it's large and takes alot of space, but hey, all for better security!

The log really looks clean, I don't know what to say.
You can remove igfxtray.exe and ALCMTR.EXE in msconfig, if found.
Also, be sure not to select anything else!!
After/if you do it, reboot your computer and then it will tell you you have made some changes, click Do not display this message again.
After that please tell me, is the computer experiencing anymore problems?
If yes, come back, we will try some things else.
