i might get another HSF soon an i have no idea how to apply the thermal paste do put a drop in the middle?.
do i do a line on the edge an use something to spread it across? or what.
how thick?
i know i sound like a noob hear but i have never had to do it before. PLZ help me

seeing that you have a dual core I would just use the line straight down the middle. Just make a thin straight line down the middle of the CPU. You can spread a thin layer across the whole CPU if you want too

I tried all sorts of methods, they don't seem to make a difference much..just make sure you don't use too much!

What about reapplying thermal paste, is there anything I should about the old compound that will be on the CPU and HS?

Refer to my Post #5 in this Thread, or read below...

First, getting the old stuff off...
Start by removing the CPU from the MoBo. Carefully scrape off as much TP as you can with a credit card or razor blade from both the CPU and HSF. Next, take a lint-free cloth (coffee filters work GREAT) and rub away any residue. Keep rubbing away until no more greyish-material is picked up by the filter/cloth. Now, take rubbing alcohol (higher-purity stuff works, too, but rubbing alcohol is fine if you already have it and don't want to buy the other stuff). Put a few drops of it on the filter/cloth and again, keep rubbing until no greyish-residue can be seen. Do this for both the CPU and HSF.

Any oils or viscous liquids can penetrate those tiny little holes and imperfections on the HS and CPU. It can negatively impact heat transfer efficiency. This is what is said, and I try to stick to it. I have used low purity alcohol though, to no ill effects. It just depends really.
